England legend Peter Beardsley has named ‘unbelievable’ former teammate John Barnes as the best star he’s ever played with.
After playing for Liverpool, Everton and Newcastle, to name a few, Beardsley played among some iconic names in English football.
Beardsley played with many stars
That includes the Rest Is Football podcast co-hosts Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker.
But neither of the two former strikers got the honour of being named Beardsley’s greatest ever teammate.
When asked the question by Shearer, he said: “As weird as it sounds it wouldn’t be a striker as such, it would be [John] Barnsey.
“Barnsey, when I went to Liverpool, was unbelievable. So obviously, Micah will know him really well, he’s a really top person. You obviously know that, Al, but what a player, what an absolutely unbelievable player.”
Beardsley and Barnes arrived at Anfield in the summer of 1987, joining John Aldridge, with Beardsley and Aldridge forming a new strike partnership to replace Ian Rush and Kenny Dalglish.
The trio went on to win the league with the Reds that season, unleashing deadly attacks on their opponents week in week out.
Beardsley continued: “He would carry our team, Liverpool, when we won the league when we first went, he was frightening. Really, really frightening.
“But when you look at people making goals, like [Aldridge], we had Rushy scoring goals for fun because of his delivery. I was, without being negative, being the worker, chasing people.
