‘All I can say’ – Bayer Leverkusen ace lifts lid on Xabi Alonso reaction amid Liverpool links

Xabi Alonso is set to face a huge decision about his future this summer as former clubs Liverpool and Bayern Munich bid to appoint a new manager. Alonso is wanted by both clubs with his Bayer Leverkusen side enjoying a remarkable campaign.

Leverkusen has not been beaten in any competition this term and sits 10 points clear of Bayern at the top of the Bundesliga. There remains a chance that he could face off against Jürgen Klopp in the Liverpool boss’ last match in charge, should both sides reach the Europa League final.

Speculation has been rife about Alonso’s future since Klopp announced his exit in January, before Bayern announced it will be parting ways with Thomas Tuchel.

But Leverkusen’s performances and results have not slipped and defender Jonathan Tah insists there is no indication that Alonso’s head has been turned by the interest.

“I don’t have the feeling at all that he is busy with other things other than us and Leverkusen,” Tah told Sky Germany. “He is 100 per cent committed. You just feel that he is there and is focused on it, everything about him.

“No player can influence what happens in the summer. In the end he will probably decide for himself and so will the club. All I can say is that you don’t have the feeling at all that he is somewhere else in his head.”

Leverkusen is 10 points clear of Bayern with eight games to go and five wins from those matches will secure the title. Alonso does face a test against Premier League opposition in the next round of the Europa League when his side takes on West Ham.

Despite the interest from Liverpool and Bayern, Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro said earlier this week that he was hopeful Alonso would remain in charge next season. Carro told Marca: “Xabi Alonso has a contract until 2026 and there is no reason to doubt that he will stay here. In football you never know what will happen but I have a lot of trust, we have a good relationship.”

Liverpool.com says: Alonso has maintained his focus was on Leverkusen and there is nothing to suggest anything has changed. His side looks on course to end Bayern’s domination and will fancy its chances of going all the way in the Europa League too. He will have to make a decision on his future at some point but as Tah says, that may have to wait until the summer.
