$165 million star Luka Doncic gets strong endorsement from Pau Gasol

The Los Angeles Lakers made headlines again this offseason, locking in Luka Doncic with a massive three-year, $165 million extension that includes a player option for 2028. The move ensures that Doncic remains the centerpiece of the Lakers’ future, and the reaction from Hall of Famer Pau Gasol shows just how much excitement is building around the team heading into the new campaign.

Pau Gasol praises Luka Doncic’s commitment to the Lakers

Pau Gasol, whose name is forever etched in Lakers history after helping Kobe Bryant capture back-to-back championships in 2009 and 2010, did not hold back when asked about Luka Doncic. The Spaniard was spotted courtside at a Los Angeles Sparks game, where he shared his enthusiasm about the franchise’s direction.

“It’s great. Obviously, we were all thrilled, shocked and excited last season when the trade happened,” Gasol said via Spectrum SportsNet. “It’s great to have Luka in a Lakers uniform and having that anchor for the next many years to come. Super excited for the team. Let’s see how we can take advantage of the team right now and try to have another run at it.”

Gasol knows firsthand what it means to carry championship weight in Los Angeles. When he arrived from Memphis in 2008, his presence instantly elevated the Lakers, culminating in three straight trips to the NBA Finals. Now, he sees Doncic positioned in a similar spotlight, but with the responsibility to create his own legacy.

Doncic, who averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.5 assists across 28 games last season in purple and gold, has already become the face of the franchise. This summer, he made headlines for his physical transformation as well, entering camp in arguably the best shape of his career.

Gasol’s support also came through on social media after the extension was announced. On X, formerly Twitter, he wrote: “Congratulations on your extension, happy for you and proud of the efforts your foundation is making to break down the barriers that too often stand in the way of young athletes chasing their dreams.

“Today I’m also committing $5 million to help 77 young athletes around the world chase their dreams, just like I did,” Doncic wrote on X. “Basketball gave me everything, and I’m lucky to be able to give back and help the next generation.”

The gesture resonated with Gasol, who has long been involved in charitable initiatives himself. The Lakers’ roster around him is also intriguing. The front office added Deandre Ayton to bolster the interior and brought in Marcus Smart. Also, LeBron James, who was in elite form last year, is returning for at least one more season.
