Many are already picturing Xabi Alonso at Anfield, but the hierarchy are not counting any chickens just yet, while a possible transfer plan could also be thwarted by competition from elsewhere. Here’s your round-up of the latest Liverpool news.
Liverpool wants to appoint Alonso as the heir to Jürgen Klopp. According to TeamTalk, it has gone as far as to table a three-year deal.
However, there are still no guarantees that Alonso accepts any offer. For instance, a report from Sky Germany claimed that he will either remain at Bayer Leverkusen or move to Bayern Munich.
Per Give Me Sport, Rúben Amorim is a prominent name in discussions at Liverpool over a ‘Plan B’. While Alonso is certainly the ideal appointment, the Reds supposedly rate the Sporting boss higher than has been reported elsewhere.
Amorim is said to be admired by Michael Edwards, as well as his newly-appointed sporting director Richard Hughes. Other ‘influential’ members of the backroom team also like him.
Sporting currently leads the way in the Portuguese top flight. It has an edge over Benfica, whom Liverpool could face in the Europa League semi-finals, and Porto, who pushed Arsenal to penalties in the Champions League.
As well as finding a manager, Liverpool needs to make some transfer plans for the summer. Those two plans are likely to be intertwined, so the latter may not be able to progress too far without the former, but Edwards is bound to be sketching out some provisional options.
Among those is Teun Koopmeiners. La Gazzetta dello Sport recently claimed that Liverpool is among the clubs interested in the versatile Atalanta midfielder.
