Xabi Alonso explains why he made the ‘right’ decision to turn down Liverpool

Xabi Alonso has explained why he has no regrets over his decision to turn down Liverpool’s proposal to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.

The former Reds midfielder has guided Bayer Leverkusen to within touching distance of a first ever Bundesliga title, with his side 13 points clear at the top of the table after an unbeaten season.

Touted as the next megastar of European management, the Spaniard has accrued interest from many of the continent’s big hitters – with Liverpool and Bayern Munich said to be those most interested in acquiring his services this summer.

However, those plans have been scuppered by Alonso’s decision to stay and build on what looks to the start of something special at the BayArena.

Former Sky Sports host Richard Keys was far from impressed with this choice, ripping into the Spaniard for ‘bottling’ a major move up in his career at a time where his stock is at its peak.

However, Alonso insists that he still has time to link up with a European giant down the line – and is currently not looking to rush into any decision that would see him depart Leverkusen after just 18 months in charge.

Alonso spoke to the press after pulling off yet another incredible result at the Leverkusen helm this weekend, coming from a goal down to beat Hoffenheim in stoppage time to extend his side’s unbeaten record.

“I tried to respect everyone. I tried to take my own decisions, tired that they are the right ones and now I feel like this is the right one to keep in this club and keep improving and developing,” he said speaking to Sky Sports on Saturday.

“This is my first season as a coach in a pro team, firsts season complete so I think I still have time to try things.

“At the moment it feels right to be here. I’m really happy. The club is great. The fans are great. The players are unbelievable, so many reasons.”

With Alonso seemingly out of the picture, Liverpool have turned their attention to Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim, who appears far more likely to depart Lisbon in the summer.
