Caoimhin Kelleher vows to ‘right a wrong’ as Liverpool return to Old Trafford for a Premier League showdown three weeks after Manchester United dumped Reds out of the FA Cup

Kelleher is unbeaten in nine league games deputising for the injured Alisson and relishing the chance to avenge Liverpool’s 4-3 loss in the cup when Amad Diallo scored in the final minute of extra-time.

‘We wanted to go back as soon as possible to right the wrong of that defeat – the sooner the better to be honest,’ admitted the 25-year-old.

‘We had a chance to put that game to bed but weren’t as clinical as we should have been.

‘It was my first time at Old Trafford and you could feel the crowd, similar to Anfield. We have to manage that and control the game as much as we can.’

Liverpool will be champions in Jurgen Klopp’s last season if they win their remaining eight matches but today’s clash with their fiercest rivals looks the most difficult fixture left.

Kelleher, who has already lifted the Carabao Cup and also hopes win the Europa League with the final in his native Ireland, is grateful he didn’t force a move last summer having become frustrated by a lack of first-team opportunities.

‘There were discussions with the manager. It was clear I wanted to play as much as I could but with the circumstances, I had to stay and now I’ve got this big opportunity,’ he explains.

‘It was very unfortunate Ali picked up an injury (hamstring) but it’s been an opportunity for me. For sure, I don’t think it could have worked out much better to be fair in terms of staying. I’ve obviously had a lot of games so I think the decision was the right one.’

Kelleher will make his 25th appearance in all competitions this season, one more than Alisson, and with so many big matches coming up he won’t think about his longer-term future until the summer.

Jurgen Klopp has credited side’s ability to compete on all fronts in part due to his strong No2
Klopp has said Liverpool’s challenge on three fronts would not have been possible without his stand-in goalkeeper whose calm demeanour during games has been widely praised.

‘It’s just my personality,’ says Kelleher. ‘I am relaxed but have always trusted my ability and take that onto the pitch.

‘It’s important for a goalkeeper to stay level-headed because you need to make good decisions in a split-second.

‘I don’t get overly nervous for games. I’ve always been quite calm and it’s worked out well. I’m getting that rhythm of playing and going for major trophies which is what every player wants.’
