‘Doesn’t get in over Bradley’ – Liverpool warned off summer transfer target

Liverpool have been linked with a summer transfer for Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong, but former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson thinks he would only be third-choice at the Reds.

Frimpong has understandably attracted interest, with Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Bayern Munich all reportedly tracking his progress this season.

The Dutch international right-back has contributed a barely fathomable 12 goals and 11 assists to Leverkusen’s cause this season as they remain on course for a continental treble of Bundesliga, DFB Cup and Europa League under Xabi Alonso.

Frimpong’s value has climbed to €44.8 million per FootballTransfers’ in-house algorithm, which is line with the €40m plus add-ons it is understood Leverkusen would accept for a player they paid Celtic just €11m for in January 2021.

“I think Frimpong’s a good player,” he told Football Insider. “His time at Celtic showed he was a good player and at Leverkusen, he’s gone onto the next level. But as far as Liverpool are concerned, they don’t need him.

“If you’re going to pay that fee for that kind of player, I can’t see where he would play. He doesn’t get in over Conor Bradley or Trent Alexander-Arnold… there’s other areas where money would be better spent than stockpiling the right-back position when there’s two there that are already better than him.”

Frimpong might be better served staying at Leverkusen anyway. A mass exodus was expected should Alonso be poached by Liverpool or Bayern, with Frimpong likely to follow him to either destination.

But the Spaniard recently reaffirmed his commitment to the Leverkusen cause, and will try keep Bayern in check in the Bundesliga for a second successive season with a largely unchanged squad.
