Liverpool talent Luke Chambers, who is currently on loan at Wigan Athletic in League One, could miss all but one of his temporary side’s final four matches of the season. The 19-year-old was left out of the squad against Port Vale this weekend because of a muscle injury.
Chambers, who is an exciting left-footed defender, has made 16 appearances to date for Wigan in the third tier since signing on loan from Liverpool in January. In that time, he has provided two assists for Shaun Maloney’s men while playing in a variety of positions including center-back, left-back and wing-back.
“Luke’s had a very hectic few weeks, and we’ve been trying to manage him as best we can,” Maloney said, via Wigan Today. “Unfortunately I don’t think he’ll be back until the very last game of the season, the same sort of timeframe as Josh Stones.”
Wigan is currently mid-table in League One and Chambers has been more than comfortable at that level. It is a slightly higher level, in terms of the club, in fact, that Jarell Quansah was last year playing for Bristol City.
Prior to heading out on loan, Chambers had played in the Carabao Cup and Europa League for Liverpool but it was decided in January that his best chance of minutes would come by going elsewhere. With defensive options including Andy Robertson back available, that was the strongest route to senior action with him having outgrown playing for the U21s.
