Liverpool were eliminated from the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League on Thursday, April 18, despite their 0-1 win over Atalanta in Bergamo. The Italians had defeated the Reds 0-3 at Anfield a week before and advanced to the semi-finals with a 3-1 aggregate score. After the game, Liverpool fans were disappointed with their team’s elimination and also called out superstar striker Mohamed Salah for his performance. Some even urged him to leave the club and move to Saudi Arabia. Here are some of their reactions on X (formerly Twitter):
“Salah must go to Saudi. He has served Liverpool well but whatever injury he had has taken the edge off him. He was been our worst player for the past 3-4 games. We need a creative mid who can beat a man and a killer of a striker.”
“Salah has been finished for a year now, he papers it over with pens and tap ins.”
“Fair but I feel like Salah is downgrading with his age now could be the right time to sell.”
“Liverpool still has Enough time to Sell Salah and make profit from his sale. Salah is not the Salah we used to know, Saudi Arabia won’t be bad for business!!” another fan said.
“Hope Edwards sells Salah, Nunez for next season immediately. They are finished,” another chimed in.
“Salah does not deserve to be in our starting line up until the end of the season. Then sell him off at the end of the season,” a fan said.
Mohamed Salah scored the Reds’ only goal against Atalanta from the penalty spot (7′), but missed a few more chances to score again and help his team turn things around after their 0-3 home loss.
Liverpool boss not concerned about Mohamed Salah’s struggles
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp addressed Mohamed Salah’s struggles and fans’ concern about his form after the match, but didn’t seem to be too worried about his star striker’s condition. Klopp added that ups and downs were part of the game.
“I am not concerned. This is what strikers do and what happens to strikers. They have to go through this, he has to go through this. He’s one of the most experienced players we have in the squad. That’s pretty much all. It’s not like Mo hasn’t missed chances before in his life, that’s part of the game. The penalty was super convincing, it was a super penalty. The next chance was unlucky but it’s not the first time he’s missed a chance. I’m not particularly concerned, no,” Klopp said, via The Guardian.
The Egyptian striker has played 38 games across all competitions this season, with 24 goals and 13 assists. He is under contract with the Reds through to the summer of 2025.
