Michael Jordan wrote a love letter to high school sweetheart. Now it’s up for auction

Basketball star Michael Jordan wrote a love letter to his high school sweetheart — and now, it’s for sale at auction.

“I can’t keep from thinking about you,” the letter reads. “I hope I can never stop thinking about you. Laquetta you are my whole life next to basketball. Please don’t get mad about that statement. You are my whole life. But you can’t have basketball.”

Lelands, a sports memorabilia auction website, said Jordan wrote the signed, two-page letter in 1981. At the time, he was a student at Laney High School in Wilmington, North Carolina.

“This is one of the most amazing Michael Jordan items we have ever seen and even if one has no intention of ultimately owning it, we encourage everyone to read it,” Lelands wrote. “Jordan wrote this letter near the end of his senior year in high school to his girlfriend, to whom he professes his love numerous times. However, he makes clear that she will have to share his love with the game of basketball.”

So, how much would it cost to get your hands on the handwritten letter? The starting bid for the two sheets of notebook paper was $10,000. The auction lasts until March 15, and the reserve hadn’t been met as of Feb. 25.

“One day I hope to make a living of this and I want you to be by my side,” the letter reads. “I can never show you how much my love goes for you but each day I try to show you.”

A year after Jordan wrote the letter, he won an NCAA championship with the UNC Tar Heels. Then in the 1990s, he added six NBA titles to his resume while playing for the Chicago Bulls. He was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009.
