CLEMSON STUNS TAR HEELS IN THRILLING ACC TOURNAMENT SHOWDOWN — TIGERS SURVIVE LAST-SECOND UNC COMEBACK TO ADVANCE!

The stage was set for an intense battle in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals, and it delivered every ounce of drama basketball fans could hope for. In a thrilling contest packed with momentum swings, defensive intensity, and a frantic final-minute comeback, the Clemson Tigers narrowly defeated the North Carolina Tar Heels 80–79 on Thursday night in Charlotte. The victory sends Clemson into the tournament semifinals while North Carolina is left to regroup and await its NCAA Tournament fate.

Coming into the matchup, North Carolina entered as the No. 4 seed and was playing its first game of the tournament. Clemson, the No. 5 seed, had already played the previous day and appeared battle-tested and ready from the opening tip. Although the Tar Heels started the game with early energy and confidence, Clemson quickly demonstrated resilience and discipline that would ultimately define the game.

North Carolina struck first, jumping out to a 14–8 lead early in the first half. The Tar Heels looked sharp offensively and appeared ready to take control of the game. However, Clemson’s defense soon tightened dramatically, creating one of the most important stretches of the contest. Over nearly ten minutes of game time, the Tigers limited North Carolina to just two made field goals. That defensive dominance allowed Clemson to completely flip the momentum.

During that crucial stretch, Clemson transformed a six-point deficit into a nine-point advantage, pushing the score to 31–22. The Tar Heels attempted to fight back and managed to trim the deficit to just two points late in the half. Yet Clemson once again responded with composure, closing the first half on an impressive 8–2 run. By halftime, the Tigers had seized control of the game with a 39–31 lead.

The second half continued to favor Clemson as the Tigers maintained their defensive pressure and offensive efficiency. North Carolina struggled to establish rhythm offensively, while Clemson capitalized on scoring opportunities. The Tigers’ ability to control the tempo and limit UNC’s offensive runs became a defining factor throughout the game.

One of the standout performers for Clemson was forward Nick Davidson, who delivered a spectacular shooting performance from beyond the arc. Davidson knocked down four three-pointers during the game, a remarkable turnaround from the teams’ previous meeting in Chapel Hill where he went 0-for-5 from deep. His shooting provided Clemson with crucial spacing and momentum, helping the Tigers extend their lead in the second half.

At one point, Clemson built what seemed to be a comfortable advantage, stretching the lead to 18 points after one of Davidson’s three-pointers. With the Tigers leading 73–58 and only 3:36 remaining in the game, it appeared that Clemson had effectively sealed the victory.

But North Carolina refused to surrender.

In a dramatic late-game surge, the Tar Heels suddenly caught fire from beyond the arc. Guard Derek Dixon ignited the comeback, hitting three clutch three-pointers in the closing minutes. His shooting sparked new life into the Tar Heels and energized the crowd as UNC rapidly chipped away at Clemson’s once-commanding lead.

Forward Henri Veesaar also played a key role in the comeback effort, knocking down two important three-pointers that helped North Carolina close the gap even further. What had once been an 18-point deficit was suddenly reduced to a one-possession game.

With just seconds remaining, Dixon delivered one final dramatic moment. He drained another three-pointer with less than three seconds left on the clock, cutting Clemson’s lead to a single point at 80–79 and sending shockwaves through the arena. The Tar Heels were suddenly within striking distance of an improbable comeback victory.

Clemson still had to survive one last scare.

After being fouled, Nick Davidson stepped to the free-throw line with a chance to secure the game. However, in a surprising twist, he missed both free throws, leaving the door open for North Carolina to steal the win in the final seconds.

UNC’s Jarin Stevenson grabbed the opportunity and launched a desperate half-court shot as time expired. The ball sailed through the air as fans held their breath—but it ultimately fell well short of the basket. The buzzer sounded, and Clemson escaped with the dramatic 80–79 victory.

After the game, Stevenson reflected on the team’s struggles during Clemson’s dominant stretches.

“We couldn’t get our runs going because they were scoring on the other end,” Stevenson said. “We’ve got to be better.”

Despite the loss, Henri Veesaar delivered one of the best performances of his career for North Carolina. The forward recorded career highs with 28 points and 17 rebounds, earning his 14th double-double of the season. It was also his first double-double since North Carolina’s first matchup against Duke on February 7.

Dixon’s late-game heroics also stood out, as his clutch shooting nearly completed one of the most dramatic comebacks of the tournament.

“Shots started to fall, but I think it started defensively,” Dixon said. “Just a little bit more of an edge about us, a little bit more fight. Really just trying to do whatever we could to get back in the game.”

For North Carolina, the loss continues a frustrating trend in the ACC Tournament. The Tar Heels have now lost their last four games when entering the tournament as the No. 4 seed and hold an overall record of 4–7 in that position.

Still, the season is far from over for UNC. With a strong overall record of 24–8, the Tar Heels remain firmly in the picture for the NCAA Tournament. The team will now turn its attention to Selection Sunday, when the official tournament bracket will be announced.

For Clemson, however, the focus shifts immediately to the next challenge. After surviving one of the most dramatic games of the ACC Tournament so far, the Tigers move forward with momentum, confidence, and the belief that they can continue their postseason run.

And if this game proved anything, it’s that March basketball always delivers unforgettable drama.
