Fast forward to 2026, and history repeated itself. This time, it was Cameron Boozer guiding Duke to an ACC title and another deep tournament run—only for the team to collapse after building a commanding 19-point lead in the Elite Eight against UConn Huskies.
The crushing defeat was sealed by a clutch three-pointer from Braylon Mullins, sending UConn to the Final Four and leaving Duke searching for answers once again. Back-to-back postseason exits from winning positions have raised a critical question: what exactly is missing?
Head coach Jon Scheyer now faces the challenge of retooling a roster capable not just of contending—but finishing the job. With stars like Boozer and Isaiah Evans likely heading to the next level, Duke is staring at a significant scoring void. Replacing that production internally will be difficult, even with another loaded recruiting class arriving in Durham.
Highly touted freshmen such as Cameron Williams, Deron Rippey Jr., and Bryson Howard bring talent and upside, but relying solely on youth is a risky formula—especially for a program with championship expectations. If Duke wants to take the final step, it needs a proven, battle-tested scorer who can deliver in high-pressure moments.
That’s where John Blackwell comes into the picture.
The former Wisconsin Badgers standout has emerged as one of the most coveted players in the transfer portal, and for good reason. Blackwell is the kind of guard who can immediately elevate a contender into a true title favorite. His offensive versatility, composure, and experience make him an ideal fit for Duke’s current needs.
Standing at 6-foot-4, Blackwell possesses excellent size for a guard and the ability to impact the game at all three levels. For Duke, his value goes beyond statistics. In recent tournament losses, the Blue Devils struggled to generate reliable offense in late-game situations. When defensive pressure tightened and possessions became more deliberate, Duke lacked a consistent shot creator who could take over.
Blackwell solves that problem instantly.
He’s not just a scorer—he’s a closer. Whether it’s creating his own shot, facilitating for teammates, or calmly knocking down perimeter jumpers, Blackwell thrives in moments where others hesitate. Additionally, even with Cayden Boozer expected to return, Duke’s backcourt still needs reinforcement. Of course, landing Blackwell won’t be easy. Programs like Illinois Fighting Illini and Louisville Cardinals are also in pursuit, each offering compelling opportunities. Louisville, in particular, has been aggressive in the portal and could present strong competition.
However, Duke has a powerful pitch of its own. Few programs can offer the combination of national exposure, player development, and consistent championship contention that the Blue Devils provide. Under Scheyer’s leadership, Duke has proven it can assemble elite rosters capable of deep tournament runs.
Now, it’s about finishing.
Adding Blackwell could be the move that transforms Duke from a team that contends into one that conquers. His experience, scoring ability, and poise under pressure align perfectly with what the Blue Devils have been missing in their pursuit of a national title.
