According to reports from those close to the program, the connection between Avdalas and Samodurov goes far beyond casual familiarity. David Sisk of TarHeel247 recently revealed that the relationship between the two international stars could become a significant factor in UNC’s pursuit of Samodurov. Not only are they longtime friends, but both players are also represented by the same agency, creating another layer of comfort and familiarity that could help the Tar Heels during the recruitment process.
Sisk explained that Avdalas and Samodurov had even discussed the possibility of playing together earlier in their careers, whether overseas, in college basketball, or eventually at the professional level. That bond has reportedly remained strong over the years, and UNC is hoping it can use that relationship to its advantage as the roster continues taking shape.
The shared history between the duo is substantial. Both players spent time within the famed Panathinaikos B.C. pipeline, one of Europe’s premier basketball development systems. They crossed paths with the club’s youth teams and also spent time developing under the same structure during their teenage years.
That familiarity could prove extremely valuable if Samodurov ultimately decides college basketball is the best path for his development. Transitioning from Europe to the American college game is never easy, but having a trusted teammate and friend already established in Chapel Hill would make the adjustment process far smoother.
From a basketball standpoint, Samodurov fits exactly what Malone appears to be targeting. Rather than a traditional back-to-the-basket center, he is viewed as a modern frontcourt player capable of impacting the game in multiple ways.
