Michael Malone and the UNC basketball program are quickly realizing that the international recruiting market can shift overnight. What once appeared to be a strong opportunity to land Senegalese big man Mouhamed Faye is now looking increasingly difficult as Rick Pitino and St. John’s Red Storm continue to gain momentum in the race. For a North Carolina team trying to reload its frontcourt, missing on Faye would certainly sting, but it would not leave the Tar Heels without answers.
Since taking over the program, Michael Malone has aggressively pursued international talent in an effort to reshape the roster. UNC already added promising seven-footer Sayon Keita from FC Barcelona, but the coaching staff understands that relying heavily on a young and still-developing center could become risky during a demanding ACC season.
Keita possesses enormous upside thanks to his athleticism, length, and ability to finish above the rim. However, at only 18 years old, expecting him to anchor the paint immediately may be unrealistic. That reality explains why Malone continues searching overseas for another experienced and physically mature frontcourt option who can provide stability alongside him.
That search initially centered around Faye, a talented 6-foot-9 center currently playing for Paris Basketball. The 21-year-old has developed a reputation as an energetic defender and efficient finisher around the basket. His mobility, toughness, and rebounding ability made him a near-perfect fit for the style Malone wants to implement at North Carolina.
Unfortunately for UNC, the competition intensified rapidly. St. John’s emerged as a serious contender, and many around college basketball now believe Pitino holds the upper hand in the recruitment battle. With that possibility becoming more realistic, North Carolina’s staff has likely already begun preparing alternative plans.
One name that continues to surface as a logical replacement is Brice Dessert. The 23-year-old center checks several important boxes for Malone’s system. At 6-foot-11 and 247 pounds, Dessert would immediately bring size, physicality, and maturity to a relatively young UNC frontcourt rotation.
Dessert’s offensive role would likely mirror what the Tar Heels envision for Keita. He thrives as a rim-runner, lob target, and pick-and-roll finisher who can pressure defenses vertically. While he may not stretch the floor consistently, his ability to occupy defenders near the basket creates opportunities for UNC’s guards and wings to attack.
The appeal of Dessert goes beyond his fit on offense. UNC desperately needs additional strength in the paint, especially considering the lean frames of Keita and Cade Bennerman. Dessert’s experience and physical readiness could help stabilize the rotation while the younger players continue developing.
Another intriguing option is Michael Ruzic, one of the more skilled international forwards currently exploring collegiate basketball. The 6-foot-10 Croatian prospect offers a completely different dimension compared to Dessert and Keita because of his perimeter shooting ability.
Ruzic projects as a modern stretch-five capable of spacing the floor and punishing defenses from deep. Reports suggest he shoots close to 40 percent from three-point range, a skill that would immediately elevate UNC’s offensive versatility. His ability to run pick-and-pop actions with guard Terrence Brown could make the Tar Heels significantly harder to defend.
There are concerns with Ruzic, particularly on the defensive side of the floor. He does not offer the same level of rim protection that former UNC center Henri Veesaar brought to the lineup. Still, his offensive upside may outweigh those concerns if Malone wants to create a faster, more perimeter-oriented attack.
Landing Ruzic will not be easy, however. BYU Cougars men’s basketball is reportedly in strong position, while Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball also remains involved. Yet Malone’s NBA background and UNC’s national reputation could still make the Tar Heels a compelling destination.
The third name to monitor is Egor Ryzhov, a 6-foot-11 Russian forward who nearly entered college basketball last year before backing away from a commitment to Florida State Seminoles men’s basketball. This time around, Ryzhov appears more open to making the move.
Ryzhov fits the mold of an athletic transition big who excels as a lob threat and rim-runner. Like Keita, he does much of his offensive damage near the basket, whether through put-backs, cuts, or pick-and-roll finishes. His mobility would allow UNC to maintain an up-tempo style while still protecting the rim defensively.
The biggest question surrounding Ryzhov is physical development. At only 190 pounds, he still needs significant strength before handling the nightly physicality of ACC basketball. Nevertheless, his athletic tools and long-term upside may make him an appealing fallback option if other targets come off the board.
Even if UNC ultimately misses on Faye, Malone’s international recruiting strategy continues to show ambition and creativity. Rather than relying solely on the transfer portal, the Tar Heels are exploring overseas markets aggressively in hopes of uncovering undervalued talent that fits the modern game.
For now, all eyes remain on the Faye recruitment. But whether it ends with the Senegalese center heading to Chapel Hill or Queens, Malone has already positioned North Carolina with multiple contingency plans. In today’s college basketball landscape, flexibility is everything, and UNC appears determined to ensure its frontcourt remains competitive no matter how this recruiting battle ends.
