Incoming North Carolina Tar Heels freshman Sayon Keita continues to prove why he is one of the most exciting young big men in international basketball, delivering another powerful performance as FC Barcelona Bàsquet advanced to the championship game of the NextGen EuroLeague Finals in Athens, Greece.
The 7-foot-1 center made the most of his limited playing time during Saturday’s dominant 101–84 victory over Team 3SSB. Despite playing only 15 minutes and 50 seconds, Keita produced 10 points on an efficient 4-for-5 shooting from the field while also knocking down both free-throw attempts. He added five rebounds and two blocks, continuing his remarkable defensive presence throughout the tournament.
One of the biggest highlights of the game came in the second half when Keita exploded to the rim for a thunderous pick-and-roll dunk over a defender, energizing the crowd and reminding everyone why NBA scouts and college basketball fans are paying close attention to his development.
Barcelona’s victory secured the top spot in Group B and punched its ticket to Sunday’s championship showdown against Real Madrid Baloncesto, which dominated Group A competition. Real Madrid delivered a stunning 126–48 victory over Panathinaikos B.C. in its final group-stage matchup to set up a highly anticipated title clash between two European basketball giants.
Keita has been outstanding throughout the entire tournament despite averaging fewer than 20 minutes per game. In Thursday’s 97–83 win over KK Crvena zvezda, the future UNC star posted 14 points, 10 rebounds, and an incredible seven blocked shots in only 18 minutes of action. He followed that performance with another productive outing Friday, finishing with seven points, 12 rebounds, and a block in Barcelona’s commanding 110–80 victory over BC Žalgiris.
Through three tournament games, Keita has compiled an eye-catching stat line of 31 points, 27 rebounds, and 10 blocks in just 52 total minutes on the floor. His combination of size, athleticism, shot-blocking ability, and offensive efficiency has made him one of the breakout stars of the event.
Barcelona also received a massive contribution from incoming Duke Blue Devils freshman Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje, who led the team Saturday with 22 points and 11 rebounds while playing nearly 30 minutes.
With the championship game now set against Real Madrid, all eyes will once again be on Keita as he looks to finish an unforgettable tournament run in dominant fashion.
