WHO STARTS FOR KENTUCKY AFTER MASSIVE MILAN MOMCILOVIC COMMITMENT?

Kentucky basketball made a major statement on the recruiting trail Monday night when highly coveted transfer Milan Momcilovic committed to the Wildcats over fellow finalists Louisville and Arizona. The addition immediately elevated expectations surrounding Mark Pope’s squad and further strengthened a roster that is already generating significant excitement heading into the upcoming season.
While landing Momcilovic is undoubtedly a huge victory for Kentucky, it also presents Mark Pope with a fascinating challenge. For the first time this offseason, the Wildcats have enough high-level talent and versatility to create genuine competition for starting positions. The biggest question now is simple: how will Pope construct his starting lineup?
Before Momcilovic’s commitment, Kentucky’s projected starting five appeared relatively straightforward. Zoom Diallo was expected to lead the offense at point guard, Alex Wilkins looked set to provide scoring and versatility, Kam Williams appeared destined for a major role on the wing, Ousmane N’Diaye was expected to bring size and athleticism in the frontcourt, and Malachi Moreno was the obvious choice to anchor the paint.
However, Momcilovic’s arrival changes everything.
The talented 6-foot-8 forward is one of the most dangerous shooters in college basketball and brings a unique skill set that perfectly fits Pope’s offensive philosophy. His ability to stretch defenses, knock down perimeter shots, and create spacing opens up multiple lineup possibilities.
OPTION ONE: MOMCILOVIC STARTS AT POWER FORWARD
This lineup may be the most exciting option from an offensive standpoint.
By placing Momcilovic at the power forward position, Kentucky could create one of the most dangerous shooting lineups in the country. Pairing him with Kam Williams would give the Wildcats two elite perimeter threats capable of forcing defenses to extend far beyond the three-point line.
Mark Pope has repeatedly emphasized the importance of three-point shooting and floor spacing. During his first seasons in Lexington, one of his primary goals was to create an offense capable of attempting more than 30 three-pointers per game. The addition of Momcilovic makes that vision much more realistic.
His shooting ability, combined with Williams’ potential breakout season, would create constant headaches for opposing defenses. Teams would be forced to choose between helping inside or staying attached to Kentucky’s shooters on the perimeter.
The benefits don’t stop there.
Alex Wilkins’ ability to create offense off the dribble would become even more dangerous with additional floor spacing. Zoom Diallo’s playmaking skills would also flourish, as driving lanes would be more open and passing opportunities more abundant. Meanwhile, Malachi Moreno could operate more effectively around the basket without facing constant double teams.
This lineup offers a balance of shooting, scoring, and offensive creativity that could make Kentucky one of the nation’s most explosive teams. It also aligns perfectly with Pope’s preferred style of play, which emphasizes pace, spacing, and perimeter shooting.
OPTION TWO: MOMCILOVIC MOVES TO THE WING
The second possibility may be the more realistic option based on the current makeup of Kentucky’s roster.
In this scenario, Momcilovic slides to the wing while Ousmane N’Diaye earns the starting role at power forward. That move would likely send Kam Williams to the bench, giving Kentucky an elite scoring option as a sixth man.
N’Diaye was recruited for a reason. Kentucky’s coaching staff views him as a versatile frontcourt player capable of impacting games on both ends of the floor. His size, length, athleticism, and defensive versatility make him an attractive option alongside Moreno in the frontcourt.
College basketball has increasingly favored bigger lineups in recent years. Many of last season’s most successful teams featured multiple long, athletic forwards who could switch defensively and contribute in a variety of ways. Pope appears to understand that trend and may have targeted N’Diaye specifically to help Kentucky match up against larger opponents.
Many international basketball observers have praised N’Diaye’s potential and believe he could quickly emerge as one of the most impactful newcomers in college basketball. If those evaluations prove accurate, it would make perfect sense for him to earn a starting position immediately.
A frontcourt featuring Moreno and N’Diaye would give Kentucky tremendous size and defensive flexibility. Adding Momcilovic on the wing would still preserve much of the team’s perimeter shooting while improving rebounding and interior defense.
A GOOD PROBLEM FOR MARK POPE
Regardless of which lineup Pope ultimately chooses, Kentucky fans should be encouraged by the situation.
The Wildcats are no longer searching for answers at key positions. Instead, they are debating which talented player deserves a starting role. That is the type of problem championship contenders want to have.
Momcilovic’s commitment has elevated Kentucky’s ceiling and provided the coaching staff with multiple lineup combinations capable of succeeding at a high level. Whether he starts at power forward or shifts to the wing, his shooting and versatility will make an immediate impact.
Most importantly, Kentucky now appears to have the depth, talent, and positional flexibility necessary to compete with the nation’s best teams. The Wildcats have become one of the most talked-about programs in college basketball and are widely viewed as a preseason Top 25 team.
As the season approaches, all eyes will be on Mark Pope’s lineup decisions. One thing is certain: with Milan Momcilovic now in Lexington, Kentucky has the pieces to make a serious run at championship contention.
