The Duke Blue Devils are entering the 2026-27 college basketball season with enormous momentum, and national analysts are beginning to recognize just how dangerous Jon Scheyer’s team could be.
After another impressive offseason, Duke has positioned itself as one of the leading contenders for the national championship. The Blue Devils combined elite recruiting, key returning veterans, and impactful transfer portal additions to assemble a roster that appears capable of competing for college basketball’s biggest prize.
With expectations rising in Durham, Duke recently received one of the most notable preseason distinctions in the sport. ESPN college basketball analyst Jeff Borzello named the Blue Devils the “national title contender that improved its chances the most” through transfer portal activity, highlighting the significant work Scheyer and his staff accomplished during the offseason.
That recognition speaks volumes about how highly Duke’s roster is viewed heading into the new campaign.
A Roster Built to Win Now
Duke’s success this offseason was not based on a single addition. Instead, the Blue Devils strengthened every area of the roster while maintaining a strong foundation from last season.
Several key contributors are returning, giving the team valuable continuity and experience. Patrick Ngongba, Dame Sarr, and Caleb Foster are back after playing important roles in last year’s rotation. Their familiarity with Scheyer’s system should provide stability as Duke integrates its newcomers.
At the same time, the Blue Devils once again showcased their recruiting dominance by landing the nation’s top-ranked 2026 recruiting class. The group is loaded with talent and includes several highly regarded prospects expected to contribute immediately.
Among the headline names are five-star recruits Cameron Williams, Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje, Bryson Howard, and Deron Rippey Jr. Each arrives in Durham with significant expectations and the potential to become a major factor during the upcoming season.
The combination of experienced returners and elite freshmen already made Duke one of the most intriguing teams in the country. However, Scheyer’s work in the transfer portal elevated the roster to another level.
John Blackwell Fills Duke’s Biggest Need
The most important addition of the offseason may be former Wisconsin star John Blackwell.
Borzello noted that Duke occasionally struggled to generate consistent half-court offense last season, particularly when games slowed down against elite competition. With Cameron Boozer no longer leading the offense, the Blue Devils needed a player capable of creating his own shot and carrying the scoring load when necessary.
Blackwell appears perfectly suited for that role.
The 6-foot-4 guard arrives in Durham after a standout junior season at Wisconsin. He established himself as one of the Big Ten’s most dangerous offensive weapons and earned All-Big Ten Third Team honors thanks to his ability to score from all three levels.
During the 2025-26 season, Blackwell averaged more than 19 points per game while shooting efficiently from both the field and beyond the arc. He connected on nearly 39 percent of his three-point attempts despite taking a high volume of shots, proving he can maintain efficiency while serving as a primary offensive option.
His consistency was especially impressive. Blackwell scored at least 20 points in 15 games and surpassed the 30-point mark five times. He also delivered back-to-back 30-point performances during the Big Ten Tournament, showcasing his ability to rise to the occasion in high-pressure situations.
Those scoring explosions are exactly why Duke pursued him so aggressively.
The Blue Devils needed a proven offensive leader who could take over games when possessions become difficult. Blackwell’s combination of shot creation, perimeter shooting, finishing ability, and confidence gives Duke a weapon few teams can match.
With talented teammates surrounding him, he may have even more opportunities to thrive than he did at Wisconsin.
Drew Scharnowski Adds Valuable Depth
While Blackwell received much of the attention, Duke’s addition of Drew Scharnowski could prove equally important over the course of a long season.
The former Belmont standout brings experience, toughness, and versatility to the frontcourt. He enters the program after earning First Team All-MVC honors and a spot on the All-MVC Defensive Team during the 2025-26 season.
Scharnowski impacts games in multiple ways. Beyond his scoring and rebounding contributions, he is an excellent passer for a big man and consistently creates opportunities for teammates. His defensive instincts also make him a valuable piece, as he averaged more than two combined steals and blocks per game last season.
Perhaps most importantly, Scharnowski gives Duke additional size and physicality in the paint. His ability to protect the rim, battle on the boards, and defend multiple frontcourt positions provides Scheyer with added flexibility.
Whether he starts or comes off the bench, Scharnowski strengthens Duke’s interior rotation and ensures the Blue Devils have reliable depth throughout the season.
Championship Expectations Continue to Grow
The praise Duke is receiving entering the season is no accident.
Scheyer successfully retained important contributors, landed the nation’s top recruiting class, and addressed critical roster needs through the transfer portal. Few programs can match that combination of talent, depth, and experience.
Blackwell provides the proven scoring punch Duke needed, while Scharnowski adds toughness and frontcourt versatility. Combined with an elite freshman class and returning veterans, the Blue Devils possess one of the most complete rosters in college basketball.
As preseason rankings begin to emerge, Duke is expected to sit near the top of virtually every national poll. More importantly, the Blue Devils appear equipped to meet those lofty expectations.
The road to a national championship is never easy, but Duke has assembled a roster capable of competing with anyone in the country. If the newcomers integrate quickly and the returning core continues to develop, the Blue Devils could be positioned for a special season in 2026-27.
With championship aspirations growing stronger by the day, Duke’s latest preseason honor may be just the beginning of what many expect to be another memorable year in Durham.
