Kentucky Thought It Was Playing Catch-Up. Gonzaga Appeared to Hold the Advantage. But a Sudden Shift Behind the Scenes Has Changed Everything, and Mark Pope May Be Closing in on One of the Biggest International Prizes of the Entire Recruiting Cycle.
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Just when it appeared that Kentucky basketball’s offseason had finally slowed down, another twist has emerged that could give Mark Pope and the Wildcats one more massive victory before preparations for the 2026-27 season fully begin.
After months of roster construction, transfer portal additions, and international recruiting efforts, Kentucky is suddenly gaining serious momentum in the pursuit of Serbian standout Nikola Kusturica, one of the most highly regarded young prospects in Europe.
And according to the latest recruiting buzz, the Wildcats may have surged into pole position.
A Recruitment That Appeared Headed Elsewhere
Not long ago, many around college basketball believed that Gonzaga had the upper hand.
The Bulldogs had reportedly been involved with Kusturica longer, and several analysts viewed Mark Few’s program as the favorite because of both need and timing. Kentucky was viewed as a serious contender, but perhaps not the leader.
That perception may now be changing.
247Sports recruiting analyst Travis Branham recently submitted a Crystal Ball prediction favoring Kentucky, assigning a confidence level of seven in projecting the Serbian wing to Lexington.
While predictions are far from guarantees, they often reflect growing momentum behind the scenes—and this one immediately grabbed the attention of Big Blue Nation.
Why Kusturica Is Such a Big Deal
At just 17 years old, Kusturica has already become one of Europe’s brightest young stars.
The 6-foot-9 Serbian wing possesses the type of size, versatility, and skill that NBA scouts covet. His performances have already placed him firmly on professional radar, and many evaluators believe his ceiling is extraordinarily high.
During the 2025 FIBA U16 EuroBasket Tournament, Kusturica showcased exactly why his stock continues to soar.
He averaged:
- 20.0 points per game
- 7.7 rebounds
- 3.4 assists
- 2.1 steals
He shot nearly 50 percent from the floor and earned tournament MVP honors, establishing himself as one of the premier international prospects in his age group.
Those performances haven’t been forgotten.
NBA Scouts Already Have Their Eyes on Him
Perhaps the most remarkable part of Kusturica’s rise is that his NBA future is already being discussed years in advance.
Several draft evaluators believe he could eventually become a lottery selection, while NBA Draft Room currently projects him as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2028 NBA Draft.
That kind of projection is reserved for elite talent.
Because of his age, Kusturica is expected to spend two seasons in college basketball before becoming NBA eligible, meaning whichever program lands him could benefit from multiple years of development and star-level production.
That’s precisely why his recruitment has become so competitive.
Another Statement Addition for Mark Pope?
The offseason wasn’t always smooth for Kentucky.
There were moments when uncertainty surrounded roster construction. Fans anxiously watched transfer decisions, NBA Draft declarations, and recruiting battles unfold.
But Pope has steadily transformed those concerns into optimism.
