Malachi Moreno believes returning to Kentucky was the best decision for his future after going through the NBA Draft process and receiving valuable feedback from league executives.
Like many Kentucky players before him, Moreno used the pre-draft process as an opportunity to understand how NBA teams evaluate prospects and what areas of his game need improvement.
After completing the process, Moreno announced his return to Kentucky on May 25, a move that delighted Wildcats fans who wanted to see the talented big man back in Lexington.

Moreno was one of three Kentucky players who spoke to the media during the early stages of summer workouts at the Joe Craft Center, where preparations for the new season are already underway.
His freshman season helped him develop quickly as he was forced to adapt daily in practices and games. Injuries to Jaland Lowe and Kam Williams led to a larger offensive role for Moreno as the season progressed.
Kentucky coach Mark Pope has repeatedly expressed confidence in Moreno’s potential, saying he has the ability to become one of the best big men in the nation and even earn All-American honors.
Moreno revealed that Pope’s belief in his abilities was one of the biggest reasons behind his decision to return. The Kentucky coach consistently encouraged him to aim to become the best center in the country while improving his NBA Draft stock.
The sophomore center also praised Pope for taking a hands-off approach during the draft process. Moreno said the coach allowed him and his family to make their own decisions while remaining available whenever support was needed.
According to Moreno, the experience of visiting NBA organizations provided valuable lessons that will benefit him when he eventually decides to pursue a professional career.
He met with numerous teams, including the Thunder, Lakers, Clippers, Celtics, and Trail Blazers. Those meetings involved detailed film study and discussions that helped him better understand the expectations of NBA franchises.
Moreno explained that teams highlighted both his strengths and weaknesses, giving him specific areas to improve while also showing him what skills could make him valuable at the next level.
The decision to return to Kentucky was not easy. Moreno said he had daily conversations with his brother and agent as they evaluated feedback coming from NBA teams.
Eventually, he concluded that another season in college would give him the opportunity to elevate his game, fulfill Mark Pope’s vision of becoming an All-American center, and significantly improve his draft position.
