WHY THE FORMER UNC STAR BELIEVES THE NBA DREAM IS WORTH MORE THAN MILLIONS IN NIL MONEY

Henri Veesaar made one of the boldest decisions of the 2026 NBA Draft cycle. While many college stars are choosing to remain in school and collect lucrative Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals, the former North Carolina center decided to chase his NBA dream immediately—even if it meant walking away from millions of dollars.

The decision came with a significant short-term financial cost. Reports indicated that Veesaar turned down NIL opportunities worth more than $5.5 million, with some estimates suggesting he could have earned over $6 million had he returned to college basketball. North Carolina was reportedly prepared to offer a massive package to keep him in Chapel Hill, while other programs were ready to present even larger offers if he entered the transfer portal.

Despite those opportunities, Veesaar remained committed to pursuing a professional career.

Draft night, however, delivered an unexpected twist. Instead of hearing his name called in the first round as many analysts projected, Veesaar slipped to No. 52 overall before being selected by the Atlanta Hawks. The drop represented a significant financial difference compared to what he could have earned in college or as a higher draft selection.

First-round picks receive guaranteed rookie-scale contracts. For example, the No. 23 overall pick carries a rookie deal worth approximately $17.3 million over four seasons, while the No. 30 pick is worth around $15 million. As a second-round selection, Veesaar does not have that protection. His first NBA contract will depend largely on negotiations with Atlanta, making his immediate earnings far less certain.

Still, Veesaar never viewed the decision solely through a financial lens.

Speaking at the NBA Draft Combine, he acknowledged the appeal of the NIL opportunities available to him but emphasized that personal development and professional growth ultimately drove his choice.

“There’s a lot of money being thrown around in college,” Veesaar said. “But getting thrown into the fire is the best way to learn.”

That mindset has defined his basketball journey.

Originally from Estonia, Veesaar left home as a teenager to join Real Madrid’s respected youth development program. He later moved to the United States to play college basketball at Arizona. After overcoming an elbow injury that forced him to redshirt, he continued developing before transferring to North Carolina.

His lone season with the Tar Heels became the most productive year of his college career and dramatically improved his NBA prospects. Veesaar showcased a rare combination of size, skill, and versatility that modern NBA teams value. Unlike traditional centers, he demonstrated the ability to stretch the floor with perimeter shooting, facilitate offense through passing, set effective screens, and finish efficiently around the basket.

Scouts were particularly impressed by his basketball IQ and offensive versatility. Several draft analysts viewed him as one of the most intriguing big men available. His ability to shoot from the outside, make quick decisions with the ball, and contribute as a playmaker made him an attractive option for teams seeking a modern frontcourt player.

However, questions remained.

At roughly 227 pounds, some evaluators wondered whether Veesaar possessed the physical strength necessary to battle against larger and more powerful NBA centers. Others believed he still needed to establish a clear elite skill that would immediately translate at the professional level.

Those concerns may have contributed to his draft-night slide.

The Atlanta Hawks, however, saw enough potential to trade up and secure him before other interested teams could make their move. Reports suggested that both the Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks were monitoring Veesaar closely, making Atlanta’s decision to move up appear both strategic and deliberate.

Another factor may have influenced his draft position. Reports indicated that Veesaar informed teams he was not interested in signing a two-way contract. Some franchises may have been hesitant to use an earlier second-round selection without certainty regarding contract negotiations.

Now, the focus shifts from draft position to opportunity.

Atlanta presents both challenges and possibilities. The Hawks are entering a new era following major roster changes and already possess several talented frontcourt players. Established contributors such as Jalen Johnson, Onyeka Okongwu, and Mouhamed Gueye will compete for minutes, while fellow rookie big man Ejiofor also joins the organization.

Competition will be intense from day one.

Yet Veesaar’s unique skill set could carve out a valuable role. His floor-spacing ability offers something different within Atlanta’s frontcourt rotation. If his outside shooting translates to the NBA and he continues improving defensively, he could become an important contributor much sooner than many expect.

Success will not be determined by where he was drafted. It will be determined by how effectively he develops once he reaches the professional level.

For now, critics may focus on the millions of dollars he left on the table and the disappointment of falling to No. 52 overall. But Veesaar has always prioritized long-term growth over short-term rewards.

If he earns a standard NBA contract, establishes himself in Atlanta’s rotation, and builds a successful professional career, the NIL money he declined will become little more than a footnote in his story.

Henri Veesaar made a gamble on himself. The financial reward may not arrive immediately, but he believes the path he chose gives him the best chance to achieve the ultimate goal—becoming a successful NBA player.
