TAR HEELS’ NEW STAR IS READY TO MAKE HIS MARK

The University of North Carolina basketball program continues to build excitement for the 2026-27 season, and one of the biggest reasons is the arrival of talented guard Matt Able in Chapel Hill. After weeks of uncertainty surrounding his future, Able has officially joined the Tar Heels and is already hard at work preparing for what promises to be an important season under first-year head coach Michael Malone.

For a while, there was genuine concern among UNC fans that Able might choose to remain in the NBA Draft rather than return to college basketball. His impressive athleticism, scoring ability, and overall potential made him an intriguing prospect for professional scouts. However, after carefully weighing his options, Able decided that another year at the collegiate level would provide the ideal opportunity to continue developing his game while competing for one of the nation’s most prestigious basketball programs.

That decision has already energized the Tar Heel faithful.

Now officially on campus, Able has wasted no time getting acclimated to his new surroundings. Photos and videos from Chapel Hill show the former NC State standout participating in offseason workouts, spending time in the weight room, and building chemistry with his new teammates. His commitment to improving before the season begins has only increased optimism surrounding UNC’s chances in the highly competitive ACC.

Michael Malone has made it clear that he wants to establish a culture centered on toughness, discipline, and relentless effort. Landing a player like Able fits perfectly with that vision. Known for his competitive mindset and willingness to impact games on both ends of the floor, Able brings valuable experience that should immediately strengthen North Carolina’s backcourt.

Although Malone is still working to finalize the roster, having Able officially locked in removes one of the biggest questions facing the program this offseason. Instead of worrying about whether he would return, the coaching staff can now focus on integrating his talents into the team’s system and maximizing his potential.

Able’s versatility is one of the qualities that makes him such an exciting addition. He has demonstrated the ability to score from multiple areas on the floor, attack defenders off the dribble, knock down perimeter shots, and create opportunities for teammates. His length and athleticism also allow him to defend multiple positions, giving the Tar Heels flexibility against a variety of opponents.

Beyond the statistics, Able brings maturity and experience. Having already competed in the ACC, he understands the physicality and intensity that come with conference play. That familiarity should help ease his transition into a new program while allowing him to contribute immediately from the opening tip of the season.

The offseason remains a crucial period for every college basketball team, and UNC is no exception. Summer workouts provide players with an opportunity to build chemistry, improve conditioning, and develop trust that often proves invaluable once the regular season begins. Able’s early arrival gives him plenty of time to form relationships with his teammates and learn Malone’s expectations before official practices get underway.

Fans are also eager to see how Able’s skill set complements the rest of North Carolina’s roster. His ability to handle the basketball, create offense, and defend aggressively should give the Tar Heels another reliable weapon as they aim to compete for conference and national honors.

Expectations are always high in Chapel Hill, where championships remain the standard rather than the exception. Every new season brings renewed optimism, and this year is no different as Malone begins a new chapter leading one of college basketball’s most storied programs.

Able’s commitment represents more than simply adding another talented player. It signals belief in the direction of the program and confidence in the coaching staff’s vision for the future. His decision to continue his college career at North Carolina could prove to be one of the defining moves of the offseason.

While much work remains before the season officially tips off, the early signs are encouraging. Able appears fully focused on preparing himself physically and mentally for the challenges ahead. His determination, combined with his natural talent, gives UNC another player capable of making a significant impact throughout the season.

As preseason workouts continue, all eyes will remain on Chapel Hill to watch how this new-look Tar Heels squad comes together. If early impressions are any indication, Matt Able is embracing the opportunity and is determined to make the most of his fresh start in Carolina blue.

With the uncertainty of the NBA Draft now behind him, Able can devote all of his attention to helping North Carolina return to the top of college basketball. Tar Heel fans have every reason to be excited because one of the program’s newest additions has officially arrived, and his journey in Chapel Hill is only just beginning.
