Milan Momcilovic Fires Up Big Blue Nation With Tennessee Revenge Statement

Milan Momcilovic has only recently arrived in Lexington, but he already understands what makes Kentucky Basketball different. Rivalries are woven into the fabric of the program, and few matchups generate more passion than Kentucky versus Tennessee. Even though the talented forward spent his first three collegiate seasons at Iowa State, he knows exactly what this rivalry means to the Big Blue Nation.

Kentucky fans have enjoyed plenty of memorable moments against Tennessee during Mark Pope’s first two seasons. The Wildcats have won four of their five meetings with the Volunteers during that span, helping reignite one of the SEC’s most competitive rivalries. Every matchup has carried significant importance, whether it affected conference standings, NCAA Tournament seeding, or simple bragging rights between two passionate fan bases.

For Momcilovic, however, this rivalry has become personal for another reason. His Iowa State career ended at the hands of Tennessee in the Sweet 16 of the 2026 NCAA Tournament. The Volunteers eliminated the Cyclones, ending their championship hopes and leaving Momcilovic with a disappointing final memory in an Iowa State uniform.

It was a frustrating performance for the talented forward. Momcilovic finished with just six points while shooting 2-for-9 from the field. His usually reliable three-point shot never found its rhythm, as he connected on only 2 of his 7 attempts from beyond the arc. For a player known for his scoring ability and perimeter shooting, it was one of his toughest outings of the season.

That loss has clearly stayed with him. During Thursday’s media availability, Momcilovic didn’t hesitate when discussing Tennessee. His message was short, direct, and memorable: “I want to get them back.” Those six words immediately caught the attention of Kentucky fans, who are always eager to hear new players embrace the competitive spirit that surrounds the program.

His comments weren’t meant as trash talk. Instead, they reflected the mindset of a competitor who still remembers the disappointment of seeing his season come to an end. Many athletes use painful losses as motivation, and Momcilovic appears determined to channel that experience into future success while wearing Kentucky blue.

Fortunately for him, opportunities to earn that revenge won’t be hard to find. Kentucky and Tennessee are scheduled to face each other twice during the SEC regular season, giving Momcilovic at least two chances to battle the Volunteers. Depending on how the season unfolds, those teams could also meet again in the SEC Tournament, where another high-stakes showdown would likely draw national attention.

And the possibilities don’t end there. If both programs live up to expectations, another meeting in the NCAA Tournament is entirely possible. The Wildcats and Volunteers are expected to be among the SEC’s strongest teams, making a March rematch a realistic scenario. That means Momcilovic could have multiple opportunities to erase the memory of last season’s Sweet 16 defeat.

The rivalry itself should also be a new experience for Momcilovic. While Iowa State competed in the highly competitive Big 12, the Cyclones never had a single conference rival that matched the intensity and tradition of Kentucky versus Tennessee. The emotional atmosphere, packed arenas, and passionate fan bases create a different level of excitement that many players dream of experiencing.

Playing in Lexington adds another layer to the experience. Every SEC game at Rupp Arena carries enormous expectations, but contests against Tennessee often feel even bigger. Kentucky fans circle those dates on the calendar well before the season begins, creating an electric environment that can fuel the Wildcats throughout the game.

Momcilovic’s skill set could make him an important weapon in those matchups. Known as a versatile forward with excellent shooting range, he has the ability to stretch opposing defenses and create scoring opportunities for both himself and his teammates. If he can play closer to his usual standard than he did in last season’s NCAA Tournament meeting, Kentucky will benefit from his experience and offensive versatility.

His competitive mentality also fits perfectly with what Mark Pope has been building. Pope has emphasized toughness, resilience, and confidence since arriving at Kentucky. Players who embrace big moments and don’t shy away from pressure have become central to his vision for the program. Momcilovic’s eagerness to face Tennessee again suggests he shares that mentality.

The Wildcats are expected to have one of the deepest and most talented rosters in the SEC this season, and every conference game will matter. Tennessee will once again be among Kentucky’s toughest opponents, meaning the rivalry could have major implications in the race for the SEC regular-season championship and NCAA Tournament positioning.

For Kentucky fans, Momcilovic’s statement is another reason to look forward to those matchups. Rivalries are fueled by emotion, unforgettable moments, and players who welcome the challenge. After the heartbreak of losing to Tennessee in the Sweet 16, Momcilovic now has a fresh opportunity to write a different ending. Wearing Kentucky blue, he’ll get the chance to compete in one of college basketball’s fiercest rivalries—and if his words are any indication, he’ll be ready when the Wildcats meet the Volunteers.
