MILAN MOMCILOVIC REVEALS WHY MARK POPE MADE KENTUCKY AN EASY CHOICE

Kentucky basketball landed one of the biggest prizes of the offseason when Milan Momcilovic committed to play for Mark Pope, and the talented forward has now revealed exactly why the Wildcats won his recruitment. While Kentucky’s tradition, passionate fan base, and national reputation certainly added to the program’s appeal, Momcilovic says it was the relationship with Pope and his belief in the coach’s vision that ultimately convinced him to wear the blue and white.

As one of the most highly regarded players to enter the transfer portal while also exploring his NBA Draft options, Momcilovic had no shortage of opportunities. Programs across the country recognized his elite shooting ability, versatility, and basketball IQ, making him one of the most sought-after players available. Yet despite strong interest from schools such as Arizona and Louisville, Kentucky emerged as the clear favorite well before he officially announced his decision.

Speaking with the UK Sports Network, Momcilovic shared a memorable story about the moment he informed Pope that he was committing to Kentucky.

“When I committed to Kentucky, I was on my driveway,” Momcilovic recalled with a smile. “I don’t like talking in the house because my parents eavesdrop, so I went to the driveway while Coach Pope was on the beach and let him know I was coming. The rest is history.”

The lighthearted story reflects the genuine relationship that quickly developed between player and coach. Rather than being built around flashy recruiting pitches or promises, their connection was based on trust, honesty, and a shared vision for Momcilovic’s future.

Before making his final decision, Momcilovic spent significant time evaluating his professional options. Like many talented college players, he entered the NBA Draft process to receive feedback from scouts and executives while keeping his college eligibility intact. The decision was not an easy one, as returning to school meant postponing his professional dream for another season.

After carefully weighing every option, however, he concluded that another year in college—under the guidance of Mark Pope—would provide the best opportunity to elevate his game and prepare for the NBA.

“I knew Kentucky was where I wanted to play kind of early in the process,” Momcilovic admitted.

That confidence came from more than Kentucky’s championship history. Pope’s offensive philosophy immediately stood out to him as the ideal fit for his skill set.

“I just kind of had a gut feeling that Coach Pope’s offense and his system was kind of built for me,” Momcilovic explained. “He told me that if there was one guy in the world to play for his system, it was me.”

Those words carried significant weight. Every player wants to feel valued, but Momcilovic appreciated that Pope didn’t simply recruit him as another talented addition. Instead, the Kentucky coach explained exactly how his abilities would fit into the Wildcats’ offensive attack.

Momcilovic’s confidence in Pope’s coaching style wasn’t based on recruiting conversations alone. During Pope’s successful tenure at BYU, Momcilovic had already seen his offensive system firsthand while playing for Iowa State in the Big 12 Conference. Those experiences left a lasting impression.

The two programs split their meetings during the 2023-24 season, giving Momcilovic an up-close look at how Pope’s teams operated. The fast-paced ball movement, spacing, and emphasis on perimeter shooting aligned perfectly with the way he enjoys playing.

“It helped watching Pope’s teams at BYU, when we played them at Iowa State,” Momcilovic said during an earlier media session.

“I loved the way his teams played, moving the ball, sharing it. A lot of shooting. That stuck in my mind in the recruiting process.”

That style is expected to be a major strength for Kentucky this season. Pope has consistently emphasized creating open looks, maximizing floor spacing, and encouraging unselfish basketball. For a versatile forward like Momcilovic, whose shooting ability stretches defenses, the system presents an ideal opportunity to thrive.

While Kentucky’s tradition is unmatched in college basketball, Momcilovic made it clear that history alone wasn’t enough to secure his commitment.

“It’s a blue blood,” he said. “It’s one of the biggest brands in college basketball, if not the biggest.”

Still, he insisted that prestige was only a small part of his decision.

“At the end of the day, that didn’t matter to me. I’m more of a relationship type guy, and I gotta trust you.”

Those comments highlight a recruiting philosophy that continues to define Pope’s approach. Rather than relying solely on Kentucky’s legendary name, the first-year Wildcats coach has focused on building authentic relationships with players and helping them understand exactly how they fit into his long-term vision.

For Momcilovic, that personal connection proved to be the deciding factor.

“The brand’s really cool, but I want to have a connection with the head coach.”

As Kentucky prepares for a new season filled with championship expectations, Momcilovic is expected to play a central role in Pope’s offense. His combination of size, shooting, scoring versatility, and experience should make him one of the Wildcats’ most impactful players and a potential NBA prospect once again.

More importantly, his commitment reflects the culture Pope is building in Lexington—one founded on trust, relationships, and player development. If Momcilovic’s instincts prove correct, Kentucky may have secured not only one of the offseason’s biggest additions but also a cornerstone piece capable of helping lead the Wildcats back into national title contention.
