Kentucky basketball continues to strengthen its recruiting momentum under head coach Mark Pope, and the Wildcats have now set their sights on one of the brightest young stars in the country. Four-star point guard Brady Pettigrew, one of the top prospects in the Class of 2028, officially received a scholarship offer from Kentucky following an outstanding performance at the Nike EYBL Peach Jam.
The 6-foot-3 guard was one of the biggest stars at the prestigious summer event, earning Peach Jam 16U MVP honors after leading the entire circuit in scoring. Pettigrew averaged an impressive 23.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.4 steals, and 2.0 assists per game while shooting 47.2 percent from the field, 46.2 percent from three-point range, and nearly 78 percent from the free-throw line. His elite scoring ability, confidence, and all-around play made him one of the most talked-about players in attendance.
One of the tournament’s defining moments came when Pettigrew delivered a dramatic game-winning performance against Jamal Crawford’s team. He knocked down a clutch and-one jumper as time expired before calmly sinking the free throw to seal the victory. He finished the event in spectacular fashion by scoring 26 points in one game and 32 in his final outing, proving he could consistently deliver against elite competition.
Ranked No. 16 overall nationally and the No. 2 point guard in the 2028 recruiting class by Rivals, Pettigrew entered Peach Jam believing Kentucky was close to extending an offer. That belief became reality shortly after the event concluded when Mark Pope and the Wildcats officially made their move.
Pettigrew celebrated the milestone on social media, calling the Kentucky offer a blessing and another major step in his basketball journey. For a player already attracting attention from nearly every major college basketball program, the offer from one of the sport’s most successful programs carries significant meaning.
The scholarship offer was more than simply recognition of Pettigrew’s talent. It reflected the strong relationship Kentucky’s coaching staff has already begun building with the young guard. Before the live evaluation period started, the Wildcats contacted Pettigrew and promised they would be watching him closely. When the games began, Kentucky’s coaches were exactly where they said they would be—front and center.
That commitment left a lasting impression on the talented guard.
Pettigrew explained that trust means everything in today’s recruiting landscape. With college basketball constantly changing through the transfer portal and international recruiting, he believes coaches who keep their word stand out. He appreciated Kentucky following through on its promise and believes that type of honesty creates meaningful relationships that last beyond the recruiting process.
Perhaps the biggest surprise came when Mark Pope personally reached out to him. Pettigrew admitted hearing directly from Kentucky’s head coach was a “culture shock,” knowing Pope is one of the most respected names in college basketball today.
According to Pettigrew, speaking with Pope motivated him even more because it showed Kentucky truly believes in his potential. He said conversations with Pope remind him to bring maximum effort every time he steps onto the court, knowing one of college basketball’s top coaches is paying attention to his development.
Assistant coach Mo Williams has also played an important role in Pettigrew’s recruitment. The former NBA All-Star has worked alongside Pope to establish a strong connection with the young guard, and Pettigrew praised both coaches for consistently staying in contact.
For Pettigrew, recruiting is about much more than collecting scholarship offers. He explained that offers alone do not impress him because some schools extend offers but rarely communicate afterward. Instead, he values coaches who regularly check in, build genuine relationships, and continue showing interest over time. Kentucky has done exactly that, helping strengthen its position early in his recruitment.
As his recruitment continues to expand, Pettigrew plans to visit many of college basketball’s biggest programs. Kentucky is expected to be among the schools on his upcoming travel schedule, alongside Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, Indiana, Illinois, and Texas.
Interestingly, basketball will not be the only thing he evaluates during those visits.
Pettigrew revealed that severe allergies will play an important role in his college decision. He explained that pollen, trees, pet dander, and certain climates can create serious breathing problems for him. In fact, he admitted there have already been schools he removed from consideration because the environment was not a good fit for his health.
He wants to experience each campus beyond its basketball facilities, paying close attention to the atmosphere, student life, and overall community. Pettigrew believes finding a place where he can comfortably live for several years is just as important as finding the right basketball program.
While some climates may present challenges, he joked that he simply cannot see himself living in the desert. Fortunately for Kentucky, Lexington’s changing seasons and vibrant campus environment could work in the Wildcats’ favor as his recruitment continues.
Although Pettigrew still has several years before making his college decision, Kentucky has positioned itself as an early contender. Mark Pope and his staff continue proving they are willing to invest in elite young talent long before the recruiting process reaches its final stages.
With strong communication, personal relationships, and a clear commitment to his future, the Wildcats have made an excellent first impression on one of the nation’s fastest-rising guards. If Pettigrew’s remarkable development continues, Kentucky’s early investment could eventually pay off with one of the premier playmakers in the 2028 recruiting class wearing blue in Lexington.
