CAMERON BOOZER’S SUMMER LEAGUE MASTERCLASS ENDS WITHOUT MVP, BUT HIS NBA FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHTER THAN EVER

Cameron Boozer may not have left Las Vegas with the NBA Summer League MVP trophy, but he accomplished something far more important—he proved that he is ready to become one of the NBA’s next superstar talents.

From the opening game of Summer League, the former Duke standout played with remarkable confidence and maturity, displaying the poise of a seasoned professional rather than a rookie preparing for his first NBA season. Every performance reinforced why he was selected with the No. 3 overall pick by the Memphis Grizzlies and why many basketball analysts already consider him the favorite to win the 2026-27 NBA Rookie of the Year Award.

Although Memphis fell just short in the Summer League Championship Game against the Golden State Warriors, Boozer’s individual performances throughout the tournament left no doubt about his immense potential. The Grizzlies may not have secured the championship, but they discovered that they have a franchise cornerstone capable of leading the organization for years to come.

Boozer finished Summer League averaging an outstanding 18.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game. His ability to score from multiple areas of the floor, rebound against bigger opponents, and create opportunities for teammates highlighted the complete skill set that made him one of college basketball’s brightest stars at Duke.

His consistency throughout the tournament earned him a well-deserved spot on the NBA All-Summer League First Team. While the Summer League MVP award ultimately went to Yaxel Lendeborg, many observers believed Boozer had built a strong case for the honor. Had Memphis captured the championship, there’s a good chance the rookie forward would have taken home the MVP trophy as well.

Still, Boozer’s reaction after the championship loss revealed the mentality that separates great players from merely talented ones. Rather than focusing on individual recognition, he expressed disappointment that the Grizzlies failed to win the title. His primary concern was helping his team succeed, not collecting personal awards.

That competitive mindset is exactly what Memphis hoped to acquire when it selected him in the NBA Draft. Organizations searching for franchise players want athletes who prioritize winning above individual accomplishments, and Boozer demonstrated that quality throughout the Summer League.

His leadership extended beyond the stat sheet. Whether directing teammates on the court, making smart defensive rotations, or staying composed during pressure moments, Boozer consistently showed the maturity expected from a future NBA star.

The Grizzlies also benefited from allowing Boozer to develop chemistry with second-year forward Cedric Coward during the Summer League. The two lottery selections spent valuable time learning how to complement each other’s games, something that could significantly benefit Memphis once the regular season begins.

Building on-court chemistry during Summer League often accelerates player development, and Memphis hopes that early familiarity will help both young stars contribute immediately when training camp opens. If Boozer and Coward continue developing together, the Grizzlies could possess one of the NBA’s most exciting young duos.

Boozer’s success also served as another reminder of Duke basketball’s ability to prepare elite NBA talent. Year after year, the Blue Devils continue producing players capable of making immediate impacts at the professional level, and Boozer appears destined to continue that tradition.

He was not the only former Duke player recognized for an outstanding Summer League performance. Phoenix Suns center Khaman Maluach earned All-Summer League Second Team honors after delivering one of the tournament’s most dominant interior performances.

Maluach averaged an impressive 19.5 points and a tournament-leading 12.8 rebounds per game, establishing himself as one of the league’s most improved young big men. Entering his second NBA season, the former Duke standout appears poised to become a much larger part of Phoenix’s rotation and could emerge as one of the breakout players of the upcoming campaign.

For Duke fans, seeing both Boozer and Maluach receive league-wide recognition highlights the program’s continued success in developing NBA-ready talent. Their performances reinforced the reputation of the Blue Devils as one of college basketball’s premier pipelines to professional success.

As for Boozer, the future looks exceptionally bright. His combination of scoring ability, basketball IQ, rebounding, passing, leadership, and relentless competitiveness gives him all the tools necessary to become one of the NBA’s next elite players.

While missing out on the Summer League MVP may sting temporarily, history suggests those awards rarely define careers. What truly matters is how players perform when the regular season begins, and Boozer has already shown every sign that he is prepared for the challenge.

The Grizzlies leave Las Vegas without a championship trophy, but they gained something potentially even more valuable—a future franchise leader who embraces pressure, values team success over personal accolades, and possesses the talent to transform Memphis into a consistent contender.

If his Summer League performance is any indication, Cameron Boozer’s NBA journey is only beginning, and basketball fans across the league should expect to hear his name in Rookie of the Year conversations, All-Star discussions, and perhaps even championship races in the years ahead. The MVP award may have slipped away this summer, but Boozer’s ultimate goal has always been much bigger: building a winning legacy in the NBA.
