MICHAEL MALONE SCRAMBLES TO STRENGTHEN UNC’S FRONTCOURT AS TAR HEELS CHASE ELIGIBILITY LONG SHOT

North Carolina’s frontcourt has quickly become one of the biggest concerns entering the 2026-27 college basketball season, and first-year head coach Michael Malone is leaving no stone unturned in his search for answers. After missing out on several key frontcourt targets and watching important roster plans fall apart, the Tar Heels are now reportedly exploring the possibility of adding former Florida center Micah Handlogten, despite the fact that he has exhausted his college eligibility.

The reported pursuit highlights just how urgently North Carolina is trying to reinforce a position group that many analysts believe is among the weakest in the ACC. Malone inherited high expectations when he arrived in Chapel Hill, but rebuilding the roster has proven more difficult than expected.

One of the biggest setbacks came when elite center Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje committed to Duke instead of North Carolina. Losing that recruiting battle was a significant blow, especially considering the Tar Heels’ need for size and interior production. Adding to the frustration, several basketball analysts have suggested that Duke transfer Drew Scharnowski could have immediately become UNC’s starting center had he chosen the Tar Heels instead.

The situation became even more challenging after Henri Veesaar unexpectedly declared for the NBA Draft, leaving North Carolina without one of its most experienced interior players. His departure created a major gap in the frontcourt and forced the coaching staff to rely heavily on unproven talent.

As things currently stand, the Tar Heels are expected to depend on international big men Sayon Keita and Alexandros Samodurov. While both players possess intriguing potential, neither has established himself at the college level, leaving plenty of uncertainty about how the frontcourt will perform against elite ACC competition.

That uncertainty appears to be driving North Carolina’s reported interest in Handlogten.

The 7-foot-1 former Florida center spent four seasons with the Gators, primarily serving as a reliable backup. During the 2025-26 season, Handlogten averaged 4.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and solid defensive minutes while playing just under 15 minutes per game. Although he was never a featured scorer, he earned a reputation as a dependable rebounder, rim protector, and physical interior presence.

Following the season, Handlogten participated in the NBA Summer League with the Utah Jazz in hopes of earning a professional opportunity. However, he is also pursuing another possible path by requesting a medical hardship waiver from the NCAA that would allow him to return for an additional year of college basketball.

Whether that request will be approved remains highly uncertain.

Handlogten originally planned to use a medical redshirt during Florida’s 2024-25 national championship season after recovering from injury. However, injuries to several teammates prompted him to return late in the year, and he appeared in 16 games during the Gators’ championship run. By choosing to return, he voluntarily used the season that otherwise could have preserved his eligibility.

Because of that decision, many observers believe his case for another year is relatively weak under current NCAA rules. Still, the changing landscape of college athletics has shown that eligibility decisions are no longer always straightforward. Numerous athletes have challenged NCAA rulings through legal action, creating uncertainty around eligibility standards across college sports.

Even if the NCAA denies the waiver, Handlogten could potentially pursue other legal avenues in an effort to play another collegiate season. Similar cases have emerged across the country as athletes continue to seek additional eligibility beyond traditional limits.

For Michael Malone, simply exploring the possibility of adding Handlogten demonstrates the urgency surrounding North Carolina’s roster. The coaching staff clearly recognizes the need for additional experience, rebounding, and defensive toughness before the season begins.

While Handlogten may not dramatically transform the Tar Heels into an ACC title favourite, his size and experience would immediately strengthen a frontcourt that currently lacks proven production. His ability to rebound, defend the paint, and provide veteran leadership could reduce pressure on younger players still adjusting to college basketball.

At the same time, North Carolina understands that relying solely on inexperienced frontcourt players would present a major challenge in one of the nation’s toughest conferences. Every possession in the ACC demands physicality and consistency in the paint, qualities that experienced veterans often provide.

Ultimately, the outcome now rests with the NCAA and the eligibility process. If Handlogten receives another year, North Carolina could add a valuable piece to an area of significant need. If not, Malone will have to trust his current roster to develop quickly before the season tips off.

One thing is certain: the Tar Heels are actively searching for every possible solution. Whether through recruiting, player development, or an unlikely eligibility ruling, Michael Malone is determined to strengthen North Carolina’s frontcourt as he prepares for his highly anticipated first season in Chapel Hill.
