Former Kentucky forward Wenyen Gabriel is set for another exciting chapter in his professional basketball career after officially signing with Besiktas Fibabanka Istanbul for the 2026-27 season. The move places the South Sudanese international with one of Turkey’s premier basketball clubs, giving him another opportunity to compete at the highest level of European basketball.
Besiktas Fibabanka is one of the most respected organizations in Turkish basketball and regularly competes against elite clubs in the Turkish Basketball Super League (BSL). In addition to battling for domestic championships, the club also participates in the EuroLeague, where Gabriel will once again test himself against some of the best players and teams in the world.
For Kentucky fans, the signing is another reminder of the program’s remarkable ability to produce players who enjoy long and successful professional careers. Although Gabriel’s stay in Lexington lasted only one season, his relentless energy, defensive intensity, and team-first mentality made him a fan favorite. Those same qualities have allowed him to build an impressive international résumé while also spending time in the NBA.
Gabriel arrives in Istanbul after an impressive campaign with Bayern Munich in Germany. During the 2025-26 Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) season, he appeared in 35 games and averaged 8.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per contest. His consistent effort on both ends of the floor helped Bayern capture the regular-season title before advancing to the league finals.
His impact extended well beyond domestic competition. Gabriel also suited up in 36 EuroLeague contests, averaging 6.1 points and 3.6 rebounds while facing many of Europe’s most talented players. Although those numbers may not jump off the page, his value came through his versatility, defensive presence, rebounding ability, and willingness to embrace whatever role his team needed.
Standing at 208 centimeters (6-foot-10), Gabriel has developed into one of the more dependable frontcourt players in European basketball. His ability to defend multiple positions, protect the rim, run the floor, and finish around the basket makes him an ideal fit for the modern game. Coaches have consistently praised his work ethic and professionalism, qualities that continue to make him a valuable addition wherever he plays.
Before joining Bayern Munich, Gabriel spent the 2024-25 season splitting time between two of Europe’s historic clubs. He first played for Panathinaikos Aktor Athens in Greece before later joining Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel. Both organizations compete at the highest levels of European basketball, giving Gabriel valuable experience in high-pressure environments and championship-level competition.
His journey through several elite European leagues has showcased both his adaptability and his commitment to improving his game. Whether playing in Germany, Greece, Israel, or now Turkey, Gabriel has consistently embraced new challenges while earning the trust of coaches and teammates.
Besiktas believes Gabriel’s experience will strengthen its frontcourt heading into a demanding season that includes both domestic league play and EuroLeague competition. His athleticism, defensive versatility, and championship experience should make him an important piece of the club’s rotation.
Beyond his club success, Gabriel continues to be one of South Sudan’s brightest basketball stars. He has played a significant role in helping elevate the country’s growing basketball profile on the international stage. As South Sudan continues establishing itself among the world’s emerging basketball powers, Gabriel remains one of its most recognizable and respected players.
Kentucky fans have closely followed Gabriel’s professional journey since he left college, and this latest signing is another indication that his career continues to trend upward. While many former Wildcats have found success in the NBA, Gabriel has carved out an outstanding career overseas, proving that there are multiple paths to thriving as a professional basketball player.
His move to Besiktas offers another opportunity to compete for championships while facing elite competition throughout Europe. With his experience, defensive toughness, and leadership, Gabriel is expected to become an immediate contributor for a club with ambitious goals for the upcoming season.
As the 2026-27 campaign approaches, all eyes will be on Gabriel as he begins this new adventure in Turkey. If his previous stops are any indication, Besiktas is adding not only an experienced veteran but also a tireless competitor who brings energy, resilience, and winning habits every time he steps onto the court.
For Big Blue Nation, seeing another former Wildcat continue to excel on the international stage is a source of pride. Wenyen Gabriel’s basketball journey continues to inspire, and his newest destination in Istanbul could become one of the most successful chapters of his professional career.
