UNC TARGETS ALL-SUMMIT LEAGUE STAR BIG MAN AS NCAA RULING OPENS NEW RECRUITING OPPORTUNITIES

North Carolina could have a fresh opportunity to strengthen its roster after a major NCAA eligibility ruling created unexpected possibilities for programs across the country. Following Friday night’s decision by Judge Charlotte N. Sweeney in Colorado, student-athletes who were seniors during the 2026 academic year were granted a pathway to compete for an additional season under the NCAA’s recently adopted five-for-five eligibility model.

The ruling has already sparked a wave of activity throughout college athletics, with football and basketball programs scrambling to identify experienced players who may now choose to return to the college ranks instead of beginning their professional careers. For the Tar Heels and first-year head coach Michael Malone, the timing could not be more significant.

After an offseason filled with major roster changes, North Carolina is believed to have one scholarship spot still available. Malone inherited a program determined to rebound after an underwhelming campaign that resulted in the departure of former head coach Hubert Davis. Since taking over, Malone and his coaching staff have aggressively reshaped the roster through recruiting and the transfer portal, placing a strong emphasis on building an experienced and versatile backcourt.

Transfers Terrence Brown, Neo Avdalas, and Matt Able headline a talented group of guards expected to carry much of the offensive load this season. Their arrival has given the Tar Heels plenty of skill, scoring ability, and playmaking on the perimeter. However, questions remain about the team’s frontcourt depth and physicality.

While North Carolina added promising international big men Sayon Keita and Alexandros Samodurov during the offseason, the roster still lacks proven interior experience and the kind of physical presence needed to compete against the nation’s elite programs. That need has become even more apparent as the coaching staff continues exploring additional options made available by the NCAA’s latest ruling.

One player already linked to the Tar Heels is former Florida center Micah Handlogten, who has been pursuing an extra year of eligibility after previous stops at Marshall and Florida. North Carolina has remained in contact with Handlogten throughout the process, but a new name has quickly entered the picture following Friday’s announcement.

According to TarHeel247 insiders Andrew Jones and David Sisk, North Carolina has made contact with Cameron Fens, one of the top returning frontcourt players now available.

Fens brings an impressive combination of experience, production, and toughness. Over his collegiate career at Illinois-Chicago and South Dakota, he has appeared in 103 games while making 63 starts. His development reached another level during the 2025-26 season with South Dakota, where he started all 32 games and emerged as one of the Summit League’s most dominant interior players.

The 6-foot-10, 255-pound forward averaged more than 14 points and eight rebounds per game while shooting nearly 58 percent from the field. His efficiency around the basket, combined with his physical style of play, made him one of the conference’s most reliable two-way performers.

Even more impressive was his impact on the defensive end. Fens led the Summit League in both rebounds and blocked shots, earning All-Summit League honors along with a spot on the conference’s All-Defensive Team. His ability to protect the rim, control the glass, and battle against bigger opponents would immediately address areas where North Carolina is currently seeking improvement.

Across his college career, Fens has averaged 7.3 points and 4.8 rebounds while maintaining an outstanding 57 percent shooting percentage from the floor. Although his free-throw shooting sits at 57 percent, his overall offensive efficiency and willingness to do the dirty work inside have made him a valuable contributor wherever he has played.

One of the defining performances of his career came against Oral Roberts, when he produced an outstanding 25-point, 13-rebound double-double despite South Dakota falling 67-62. In that game, Fens knocked down 8 of his 17 field-goal attempts while converting 9 of 12 free throws, showcasing his ability to carry the offensive load when needed.

For Michael Malone, adding a player like Fens would provide much more than statistical production. His size, strength, rebounding ability, and defensive presence could help balance a roster that already possesses considerable talent in the backcourt. Experienced post players are increasingly valuable in today’s college basketball landscape, especially those capable of contributing on both ends of the floor.

With the transfer portal effectively reopening because of the NCAA ruling, the next several days are expected to be extremely active across college basketball. Programs nationwide are evaluating experienced veterans who now have another opportunity to compete, while players must decide whether to return for one final collegiate season or continue pursuing professional careers in the NBA or overseas.

North Carolina is expected to remain aggressive throughout this process. Whether the Tar Heels ultimately land Cameron Fens, Micah Handlogten, or another experienced frontcourt player, one thing is clear: Michael Malone and his staff are determined to maximize every available roster spot as they continue building a team capable of returning Carolina to national prominence.
