PHILLIES STAND FIRM: TREA TURNER REMAINS THE FRANCHISE SHORTSTOP DESPITE DEFENSIVE STRUGGLES

The Philadelphia Phillies have made one thing abundantly clear: Trea Turner is staying at shortstop.

Despite growing concerns over Turner’s defensive struggles this season and increasing speculation that the club could shift him to the outfield as part of its latest roster reshuffle, interim manager Don Mattingly has firmly shut down that possibility. According to Mattingly, the organization never seriously considered moving the veteran infielder away from his natural position.

“We didn’t talk about it,” Mattingly said. “We didn’t discuss moving him to the outfield, so there’s no reason to talk to him.”

Those comments send a strong message about the Phillies’ confidence in Turner, even during one of the toughest defensive stretches of his career. While fans and analysts have questioned whether a position change could benefit both the player and the team, Philadelphia’s coaching staff believes the best path forward is to allow Turner to remain at shortstop and work through his struggles.

Turner’s defense has been one of the biggest talking points surrounding the Phillies this season. He currently ranks second in Major League Baseball with 18 errors, an uncharacteristic statistic for a player who has long been regarded as one of the league’s most athletic infielders.

Advanced defensive metrics have also painted a difficult picture. Turner owns minus-eight Outs Above Average and minus-14 Defensive Runs Saved, numbers that place him well below the league average at his position. Those figures have fueled criticism from fans and sparked debate over whether Philadelphia should consider a long-term defensive adjustment.

However, the Phillies are also looking at the bigger picture.

Just one season ago, Turner was among baseball’s strongest defensive shortstops. During the 2025 campaign, he recorded an impressive 17 Outs Above Average while committing only eight errors. He also finished with two Defensive Runs Saved, proving that he remains capable of playing elite defense when performing at his best.

That recent success gives the organization confidence that this season’s struggles are more of an exception than a permanent decline. Rather than making a dramatic positional switch, Philadelphia believes Turner can regain the form that made him one of the game’s premier shortstops.

The conversation surrounding Turner’s position intensified after the Phillies completed a significant trade to acquire three-time batting champion Luis Arraez from the San Francisco Giants. Arraez is expected to become the club’s everyday second baseman, creating a ripple effect across the infield.

With Arraez taking over at second base, Bryson Stott will slide across the diamond to third base. Alec Bohm is expected to move to first base, while superstar Bryce Harper returns to right field for the first time since suffering a serious elbow injury in 2022.

The new alignment represents one of the biggest defensive shake-ups of the Phillies’ season, but throughout all those changes, one position remains untouched—shortstop belongs to Trea Turner.

Monday’s lineup against the Washington Nationals reflected that commitment. Turner remained at shortstop while also continuing in his familiar role as the team’s leadoff hitter, demonstrating that the organization still views him as a cornerstone on both offense and defense.

The Phillies hope the revamped defensive alignment will strengthen the club during the stretch run as they continue their pursuit of postseason success. Adding Arraez brings another elite contact hitter to an already dangerous lineup while creating greater flexibility around the infield.

Even so, the team’s overall defense remains one of its biggest concerns heading into the remainder of the season. Improving consistency in the field will be critical if Philadelphia hopes to compete deep into October.

For Turner, the focus now shifts to responding on the field. His track record suggests he has the talent, athleticism, and experience to bounce back from a difficult season. The Phillies clearly believe those qualities outweigh the recent struggles reflected in the defensive statistics.

Rather than making a reactionary move, Philadelphia is choosing stability. The organization is placing its trust in one of its highest-profile players, believing that confidence and continuity will ultimately produce better results than a position change.

As the playoff race intensifies, every defensive play will carry greater significance. Turner now has an opportunity to reward the Phillies’ faith by rediscovering the dependable defensive form he displayed just one year ago.

For now, the message from Don Mattingly and the Phillies is unmistakable: Trea Turner remains their shortstop, and they have no intention of changing that.

If you’d like, I can also make it sound more like an ESPN, The Athletic, or Sports Illustrated feature.
