MARK POPE MAKES HIS MOVE: KENTUCKY COULD LAND AN ELITE 15TH PLAYER FOR A NATIONAL TITLE RUN

The Kentucky Wildcats are already entering the 2026-27 season with plenty of excitement surrounding the program, but head coach Mark Pope appears to be keeping the door open for one more major addition.

With recent eligibility rulings creating an unusual opportunity for players from the 2022 recruiting class to receive an additional season of college basketball, Kentucky has deliberately kept its 15th roster spot available. What once looked like a simple roster decision could now become a major opportunity for the Wildcats to add an experienced, high-level player capable of making an immediate impact.

Pope recently addressed the situation during an appearance on The Field of 68, where he was asked about Kentucky’s plans for the final roster spot. His response made it clear that the Wildcats are actively monitoring the situation and are prepared to act if the right opportunity becomes available.

“We’re very aggressively looking at every opportunity, like we always will. If there’s something that arises that can really help us be better, we’re going to take advantage of it,” Pope said.

That statement should certainly get the attention of Big Blue Nation.

Rather than rushing to fill the final scholarship spot, Kentucky appears willing to wait for the right player. And with several experienced players now potentially available for another season, the Wildcats could have an opportunity to add a proven veteran instead of simply filling a roster spot.

Two names have emerged as particularly intriguing possibilities for Kentucky fans: former Michigan State forward Jaxon Kohler and former Missouri forward Mark Mitchell.

Both players would address some of the areas where Kentucky could use additional strength, experience and physicality.

Kohler could arguably be the most natural fit for what Kentucky needs. The 6-foot-9 forward enjoyed an impressive final season at Michigan State, averaging 12.5 points and 8.9 rebounds per game while providing the Spartans with toughness in the frontcourt.

His rebounding ability immediately stands out.

Kentucky has plenty of offensive talent, but adding a player capable of consistently battling for rebounds and creating second-chance opportunities could make a significant difference during the most important games of the season. Kohler’s physical style would also give Pope another experienced interior presence capable of handling the demands of SEC basketball.

Mark Mitchell, meanwhile, would bring a different type of impact.

The former Missouri forward averaged an impressive 18.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game last season while shooting 54.7 percent from the field and 38 percent from three-point range. His scoring ability, versatility and efficiency would give Kentucky another dangerous offensive weapon.

Mitchell’s ability to score from multiple areas of the floor could make him especially attractive to Pope. He could provide Kentucky with another experienced player who understands high-level college basketball and can contribute immediately without requiring a long adjustment period.

Both players also have something else in common: they have already shown that they can perform against Kentucky.

That makes this situation even more intriguing for Wildcats fans.

Pope has spoken about the importance of physicality, toughness and building a team capable of competing through the intensity of an entire season. Adding either Kohler or Mitchell would give Kentucky another veteran who has already experienced the demands of major-conference basketball.

The question now is whether Kentucky can turn its open roster spot into a significant advantage.

For now, Pope isn’t committing to a specific player. His comments suggest that Kentucky is exploring every possibility and will only make a move if the addition genuinely improves the roster.

That patience could ultimately pay off.

Kentucky already has a roster that many fans believe is capable of competing at a high level. But college basketball is often decided by depth, experience, physicality and the ability to win difficult games in March. Adding an established veteran such as Kohler or Mitchell could provide one more piece to an already talented group.

If forced to choose between the two, Kohler may have the slight edge because of Kentucky’s need for additional rebounding and frontcourt toughness. His 8.9 rebounds per game would immediately address one of the areas where the Wildcats could become stronger.

Mitchell, however, could be equally valuable because of his offensive production and versatility.

Either way, the message from Pope is clear: Kentucky is not finished building its roster.

The 15th spot remains open, and Big Blue Nation has every reason to watch closely. If the right opportunity presents itself, Pope appears ready to make the move.

And if Kentucky lands one of these elite veterans, the Wildcats could go from an exciting team to a legitimate national championship contender.
