SAYON KEITA IS CHAPEL HILL BOUND AS UNC FRONTCOURT GETS A MAJOR BOOST

The wait is finally over for North Carolina basketball and Sayon Keita.

After committing to the Tar Heels earlier this spring, Keita has officially received approval for his visa, clearing the final major hurdle standing between him and his arrival in Chapel Hill. The highly regarded FC Barcelona prospect is now expected to join the UNC program during the week classes begin on campus, giving new head coach Michael Malone another exciting piece for his rebuilt frontcourt.

For North Carolina, Keita’s arrival could be one of the most important developments of the offseason.

The Mali native enters Chapel Hill with significant expectations. Despite being only 18 years old, Keita is already viewed as a potential NBA lottery pick for next year’s draft. During his time with FC Barcelona’s Under-22 team, he averaged 8.7 points and 4.3 rebounds in 19 minutes per game while competing in ACB and EuroLeague action.

Those numbers only begin to explain why the Tar Heels were so eager to bring him into the program.

Keita possesses a rare combination of size, athleticism and long-term potential. His official arrival also comes at an important time for UNC, which has undergone a significant transformation in the frontcourt following the departures of Caleb Wilson and Henri Veesaar to the NBA Draft.

Malone and his staff have spent much of the offseason rebuilding the position.

North Carolina added Northwestern transfer Cade Bennerman and brought in Greek prospect Alexandros Samodurov, although Samodurov is still awaiting NCAA clearance. The Tar Heels also recently strengthened their options with the addition of South Dakota transfer Cameron Fens.

Now, Keita gives Malone another potentially dynamic piece to work with.

Whether the freshman immediately enters the starting lineup remains uncertain. Given his age and limited experience against the physicality of college basketball, UNC may choose to bring him along gradually. However, there is little doubt that Keita may have the highest ceiling of any of the team’s big men.

His physical measurements alone are eye-catching.

247Sports scouting director Adam Finkelstein previously highlighted Keita’s extraordinary combination of length and athleticism, noting that he measured nearly 6-foot-11 at last year’s NBPA Top 100 Camp with a remarkable 7-foot-7 wingspan and a 9-foot-4½ standing reach.

That length gives Keita tremendous potential on the defensive end.

He has the quickness to protect the rim while also showing the mobility necessary to defend farther away from the basket. His ability to move his feet, recover quickly and remain active with his hands could eventually allow him to defend ball screens in multiple ways.

Offensively, his athleticism could make him an immediate weapon around the basket.

Keita runs the floor extremely well for a player his size, giving UNC a potential transition threat and an effective lob target. His quickness also allows him to separate from defenders as a roller, while his bounce gives him the ability to finish above the rim.

There are still areas of his game that need significant development.

Finkelstein has pointed out that Keita is still working with an undeveloped frame and will need to become considerably stronger. That could be especially important in the college game, where opposing teams will undoubtedly test him physically and attempt to exploit his lack of experience.

Still, those weaknesses are part of what makes his upside so intriguing.

Keita is not arriving in Chapel Hill as a finished product. He is arriving as a high-level developmental prospect with the physical tools to become an elite college big man and, potentially, an NBA lottery selection.

For Malone, having that type of talent available could dramatically change the ceiling of UNC’s frontcourt.

The Tar Heels still have questions to answer before the season begins, particularly regarding how the new pieces will fit together. But with Keita’s visa officially approved, one of the biggest offseason hurdles is now behind them.

The next step is simple: get him to Chapel Hill, get him comfortable and begin developing one of the most intriguing young big men in college basketball.

UNC fans have been waiting for Keita to make his move.

Now, the wait is almost over—and the Tar Heels may have just received one of their biggest boosts of the offseason.
