Former San Diego Padres left-hander Nestor Cortes has agreed to a major-league contract with the Phillies, according to MLB insider Robert Murray.

PHILLIES ADD EXPERIENCE AT A CRITICAL TIME
Cortes brings plenty of major-league experience to Philadelphia. The veteran left-hander has spent much of his career with the New York Yankees, where he established himself as a dependable starter and earned an All-Star selection in 2022.
Across his major-league career, Cortes owns a 3.94 ERA, demonstrating the ability to compete at a high level when healthy and effective.
His most recent experience with the Padres, however, was less successful.
San Diego acquired Cortes at last year’s trade deadline from the Milwaukee Brewers in hopes that he could strengthen the starting rotation. He made six starts for the Padres, recording a 5.47 ERA across 26.1 innings.
Cortes then suffered a tendon injury late in the season and underwent surgery on his throwing arm in October 2025. The injury kept him sidelined for an extended period, making his return to the mound one of the more intriguing developments of the Phillies’ stretch run.
Philadelphia will now hope the veteran can regain the form that made him an All-Star just a few years ago.
AN IMPORTANT ADDITION FOR PHILADELPHIA
The timing of the signing could be especially important for the Phillies.
Philadelphia has experienced some inconsistency within its starting rotation recently, and adding another experienced left-hander gives the organization additional flexibility.
