Leeds United have secured another major piece of their long-term plans after centre-back Joe Rodon signed a new contract that will keep him at Elland Road until the summer of 2030.
The new four-year agreement represents a significant show of faith in the Wales international, whose previous contract was due to expire in 2028. Rodon has become an important figure in the Leeds squad since arriving from Tottenham Hotspur, first on loan in 2023 before completing a permanent move the following summer.
At 28, Rodon is entering an important stage of his career, and Leeds are clearly convinced that his experience, consistency and leadership will remain valuable as the club continues to establish itself in the Premier League.
Since joining Leeds, Rodon has made 136 appearances across three seasons and has scored three goals. His importance to the team has grown steadily, particularly during the club’s promotion-winning campaign.
Speaking to LUTV after signing his new deal, Rodon made it clear how strongly he feels about Leeds and the direction of the club.
He said he has been impressed by the support he has received from everyone at Leeds since arriving and described the opportunity to extend his stay as something he was delighted to accept.
Rodon also highlighted the ambition surrounding the club and the progress he has witnessed during his time at Elland Road. For the defender, the decision to remain at Leeds was straightforward because of his connection with the club, the supporters and the project being developed.
He described Leeds as feeling like a second home and spoke warmly about the relationship he has developed with the fans. That connection has become an important part of Rodon’s Leeds story, particularly after helping the club return to the Premier League.
Rodon’s journey to becoming a key Leeds defender has been a long one. He came through the academy at Swansea City, his hometown club, before earning a move to Tottenham in 2020.
His time in north London, however, proved difficult. Rodon made just 24 appearances for Tottenham and struggled to establish himself as a regular first-team player. He also spent the 2022-23 season on loan with French side Rennes in an effort to gain more playing time and experience.
The move to Leeds in 2023 provided the opportunity for Rodon to rebuild his career. During his initial loan spell, he quickly became an important member of the squad, making 50 appearances.
His performances convinced Leeds to make the move permanent the following summer. As part of the deal, Archie Gray moved in the opposite direction, while Rodon signed a four-year contract with the Yorkshire club.
Rodon’s influence reached another level during the 2024-25 Championship campaign. He started all 46 league matches as Leeds produced a memorable season, winning the Championship title and securing promotion back to the Premier League.
His consistency and defensive experience were crucial to the team’s success, and he carried that importance into the club’s return to the top flight.
Last season, Rodon made 35 Premier League appearances as Leeds finished 14th and successfully avoided relegation by eight points. The campaign represented another important step in the club’s development and further demonstrated Rodon’s value at the heart of the defence.
His new contract is also part of an ambitious summer at Elland Road. Leeds have strengthened their squad with the arrivals of James Trafford, Harry Wilson, Tarik Muharemovic and Nico Elvedi, while captain Ethan Ampadu has also committed his future to the club until 2030.
With Rodon now joining Ampadu in making a long-term commitment, Leeds are building a core of experienced players who can help provide stability as the club looks to establish itself in the Premier League.
For Rodon, the new contract offers the chance to continue a journey that has transformed his fortunes since leaving Tottenham. What began as a loan move in 2023 has developed into a long-term partnership, with the Welsh defender now firmly established as one of Leeds’ most trusted players.
With his future secured until 2030, Rodon can now focus fully on the next chapter: helping Leeds compete, grow and aim even higher in the Premier League.
