As Kentucky continues to evaluate options for its final roster spot, the competition appears to be shaping up between Mark Mitchell and Jaxon Kohler. Kohler recently received news that he is eligible to play college basketball for a fifth season, prompting Kentucky to begin pursuing the experienced forward. The Wildcats have already made contact with Kohler, including a Zoom call with the 6-foot-10 forward.
Mitchell, meanwhile, is still waiting for a decision regarding his eligibility. If he is cleared to play, Kentucky is expected to be one of the strongest contenders for his services.
While the Wildcats weigh their options, Mitchell stands out as a particularly intriguing fit because he could address one of the biggest concerns surrounding Kentucky heading into the season: physicality.
During a recent interview with The Field of 68, Kentucky head coach Mark Pope acknowledged that his team could face challenges against bigger and more physical opponents. Pope pointed out that many of the nation’s top teams have added size and strength, while Kentucky is expected to rely heavily on length, athleticism and defensive speed.
“We have some length, and I think we have some togetherness that’s going to translate to toughness for us,” Pope said. “But that’s going to be a place where we’re going to be challenged in terms of just the brute strength and physicality. I think our guys are working really hard to grow in that space.”
That admission makes the possibility of adding Mitchell even more interesting.
Kentucky already has plenty of athleticism and versatility, but Mitchell would bring a different kind of toughness to the frontcourt. At 6-foot-9, he has the size and explosiveness to attack the basket, absorb contact and finish around the rim. Those qualities could be especially valuable against teams that attempt to bully opponents in the paint.
Mitchell’s ability to draw fouls could also give Kentucky another major weapon. He has consistently shown an ability to put pressure on opposing defenses by getting downhill and forcing defenders to make difficult decisions. When a team is trying to win physical battles, getting to the free-throw line can be just as important as scoring through contact.
That is one area where Mitchell could immediately make an impact.
Kohler would provide a different skill set. His rebounding ability and shooting range would give Kentucky another reliable presence on the glass while also allowing him to stretch opposing defenses. He could be an excellent addition, particularly if Kentucky wants more traditional rebounding and frontcourt strength.
Mitchell, however, offers more explosiveness.
He can create offense, attack closeouts, finish through contact and make plays defensively. His athleticism also allows him to compete around the rim, contest shots and contribute as a rebounder. While he may not provide the same level of pure rebounding as Kohler, Mitchell can still be extremely effective crashing the glass.
His scoring ability is another major reason Kentucky would have to seriously consider him.
Mitchell finished last season with several impressive scoring performances, including consecutive 32-point games to close the regular season. One of those performances came against Kentucky, giving the Wildcats a firsthand look at what he can do when his offense is clicking.
Adding that kind of offensive versatility to Kentucky’s roster could make the team even more difficult to defend.
More importantly, Mitchell’s physical style could complement the Wildcats’ existing strengths. Kentucky wants to play with pace, length and athleticism, but the team will inevitably face opponents that attempt to slow the game down and turn it into a battle in the half court.
Those games could expose a lack of brute strength.
Mitchell could help change that.
His combination of size, strength, explosiveness and versatility would give Pope another player capable of handling physical matchups. He could battle inside defensively, crash the boards, attack the rim offensively and create scoring opportunities without needing the ball in his hands every possession.
That versatility could prove extremely valuable during the grind of conference play and postseason basketball.
Of course, everything depends on Mitchell’s eligibility situation. Until a decision is made, Kentucky can only wait and evaluate its options. The Wildcats are clearly doing their homework, with Kohler emerging as another legitimate possibility for the final roster spot.
If Mitchell is cleared, though, it is easy to understand why Kentucky would be heavily involved.
Pope has already identified physicality as an area where his team could be challenged. Mitchell could provide an immediate answer. He would not completely solve every issue, but his ability to play through contact, attack the paint, rebound and contest shots could give Kentucky another dimension.
For a team built around speed and length, adding a player capable of bringing controlled physicality could be exactly what the Wildcats need.
The 15th roster spot remains uncertain, but if Mark Mitchell becomes eligible, Kentucky may have a chance to add more than just another talented forward. The Wildcats could be adding the toughness and physical presence that Pope believes his team will need to compete with the nation’s biggest and strongest teams.
