The Philadelphia Phillies have experienced plenty of twists and turns during the 2026 MLB season. After a difficult start that contributed to the dismissal of Rob Thomson, the club recovered and positioned itself firmly in the postseason race. However, inconsistent play in July once again raised concerns about whether the Phillies could maintain their place in the playoff picture.
August has brought renewed optimism. Philadelphia has gained ground on the Atlanta Braves and created more separation from several teams competing for the National League Wild Card. Still, while the team has improved, some individual players continue to struggle, and few have attracted more attention than shortstop Trea Turner.
Turner has been identified as one of Major League Baseball’s biggest disappointments this season, with his struggles coming on both sides of the ball.
According to Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report, Turner’s decline has been particularly noticeable because of the high standard he established earlier in his career. While he has produced 17 home runs and 17 stolen bases this season, his overall offensive consistency has fallen considerably.
“Turner, SS, Philadelphia Phillies – He has 17 home runs and 17 stolen bases, but he’s nowhere near the consistent hitter that he used to be,” Miller wrote. “And after putting forth a great season with his glove in 2025, he has been one of the worst defensive shortstops in 2026.”
Those numbers tell an important part of the story. Through 125 games, Turner has produced just 0.2 bWAR. That is a significant drop from his previous production with Philadelphia and even below the 2.8 bWAR he recorded in his worst full season with the Phillies in 2024.
Turner has also received an enormous amount of opportunity at the plate. His 514 at-bats are the most in the National League, yet he has not been able to turn that volume into strong overall production. He is hitting .247 with a .300 on-base percentage and a .693 OPS.
His 84 OPS+ is particularly concerning. It represents the lowest mark of his career since his rookie season in 2015, when he appeared in only 27 games and received just 40 at-bats.
The offensive struggles would already be enough to create concern, but Turner’s defensive regression has made the situation even more difficult for Philadelphia.
After producing a strong defensive season in 2025, Turner has taken a major step backward this year. He has committed 19 errors after making only eight a season ago. His Defensive Runs Saved have also fallen from a positive two in 2025 to minus-13 in 2026.
For a player occupying one of the most important defensive positions on the diamond, that decline has had a major impact. The Phillies need Turner to provide reliable defense at shortstop while also delivering the offensive production expected from one of the highest-paid players on the roster.
The situation is even more significant because of Turner’s contract. Philadelphia signed him to an 11-year, $300 million deal that runs through the 2033 season. With several years remaining on the agreement, the Phillies have a major long-term investment in the veteran shortstop.
That does not mean Turner cannot recover. His track record suggests he is capable of much better production, and a strong finish to the 2026 campaign could quickly change the conversation surrounding his season.
There could also be a future discussion about whether a position change would benefit Turner and the Phillies. Moving him to second base or the outfield could potentially reduce some of the defensive pressure while allowing the organization to keep his bat in the lineup.
For now, however, Philadelphia appears committed to keeping Turner at shortstop. With the postseason race heating up, the Phillies need their star to rediscover his confidence and consistency.
If Turner can regain his offensive rhythm and improve defensively, he could still play a major role in Philadelphia’s postseason ambitions. But with the playoffs approaching, there is little doubt that the Phillies will be hoping their $300 million star can turn one of the most disappointing seasons of his career into a strong finish when the team needs him most.
