As we look at the North Carolina Tar Heels’ roster and the direction of the program right now, there is little question that new head coach Michael Malone has already put himself in a strong position to build something special in Chapel Hill.
Malone’s arrival at North Carolina has created an entirely different level of intrigue around the program. After spending years coaching at the highest level of professional basketball with the Denver Nuggets, Malone now finds himself facing a completely different challenge: building a college basketball powerhouse and competing for the nation’s best young talent.
And if the latest recruiting developments are any indication, Malone may already be showing that he is more than capable of handling that challenge.
One of the biggest tests could come in the form of a recruiting battle with Duke.
North Carolina and Duke have one of the most intense rivalries in all of sports, and that rivalry extends far beyond what happens between the lines. Whenever the two programs are competing for the same elite recruit, the stakes immediately become even higher.
That could be exactly what happens with Beckham Black.
Black is considered the consensus No. 1 player in the country by ESPN, making him the kind of prospect every major program would love to add to its roster. North Carolina’s interest in Black is therefore no surprise, but the fact that the Tar Heels are among the programs he is seriously considering is certainly significant.
According to ESPN’s Paul Biancardi, Black is close to setting up visits to several major programs, including Texas, North Carolina, Arkansas, Duke, Miami, USC and Florida, with those visits expected to begin in September.
That list alone tells you just how competitive this recruitment could become.
There is no shortage of elite programs chasing Black, and Duke will obviously be one of the biggest names to watch. But North Carolina appears to have an opportunity to make a serious impression, and that could give Malone a chance to pull off what would be a massive recruiting victory.
The timing could not be more interesting.
When Malone was hired, there were naturally questions about how quickly he would be able to adjust to college basketball. Coaching in the NBA and recruiting high school players are two completely different jobs. At the professional level, coaches are dealing with established players, while college coaches have to build relationships with teenagers, families, high school programs and grassroots basketball circles.
For Malone, that transition was always going to be one of the biggest storylines surrounding his tenure.
However, the early signs have been encouraging.
Malone has received plenty of credit for what he has done with North Carolina’s roster, although there is an argument to be made that his work in the transfer portal has not received enough attention.
Building a roster through the transfer portal is difficult enough. Doing it while simultaneously establishing a new recruiting identity is an even bigger challenge.
That’s why a recruitment like Black’s could mean so much.
Landing the No. 1 player in the country would not simply give North Carolina another talented player. It would send a message to the rest of the college basketball world that Malone is capable of competing with the biggest programs in the country for the biggest prospects.
And perhaps most importantly, it would send that message directly to Duke.
North Carolina does not have to win every recruiting battle against the Blue Devils to establish itself under Malone. But beating Duke for a player of Black’s caliber would undoubtedly create significant momentum.
Black’s development is another reason this recruitment has become so fascinating.
Biancardi described Black as the best player in the senior class after a dramatic improvement during a dominant year. His performance with Team USA at the FIBA U17 World Cup was particularly impressive, as he averaged eight assists while committing just one turnover per game for the gold medal-winning team.
That type of production immediately separates him from most prospects.
But perhaps the most encouraging part of Black’s development is the improvement in his outside shooting.
According to Biancardi, Black increased his three-point shooting from 28 percent last year to 36 percent this summer, despite facing increased defensive attention.
That is a major development for a player already regarded as the nation’s top prospect.
Black is not simply producing because of physical tools or athletic ability. He is continuing to add dimensions to his game, and that makes his ceiling even more intriguing.
Biancardi also pointed to Black’s dynamic swagger and emphasized that maintaining that level of productivity will be essential as expectations continue to grow around the No. 1 recruit in the country.
Those expectations will be enormous.
Whoever eventually lands Black will be getting a player expected to make an immediate impact and potentially become one of the faces of college basketball.
For North Carolina, the opportunity to host Black could therefore be much more than just another recruiting visit.
It is a chance for Malone to show the nation’s No. 1 recruit what his vision for the Tar Heels can look like.
Of course, there is an important distinction that needs to be made.
A visit is not a commitment.
Just because Black visits Chapel Hill does not mean North Carolina will automatically become the favorite, and it certainly does not guarantee that the Tar Heels will eventually land him. Recruiting battles can change quickly, especially when a prospect is considering several blue-blood programs and other major contenders.
Duke, Texas, Arkansas, Miami, USC and Florida will all have opportunities to make their cases.
But North Carolina being included in that group is still a positive development for Malone.
The Tar Heels need to establish themselves as a destination for elite talent under their new head coach, and getting players like Black onto campus is exactly the kind of opportunity Malone needs.
It also gives him the chance to lean on one of the biggest advantages North Carolina has always possessed: the program’s history, tradition and national profile.
Chapel Hill remains one of the most recognizable destinations in college basketball. The challenge for Malone is turning that history into momentum for his own era.
A player like Black could become an enormous part of that process.
Imagine what it would mean if Malone could walk into a recruiting battle involving Duke and several other national powers and emerge with the nation’s No. 1 player.
That would immediately change the conversation surrounding North Carolina.
It would also give Malone credibility with future recruits who are watching closely to see whether his vision for the program can actually become reality.
For now, though, North Carolina fans should probably pump the brakes on any talk of a commitment.
There is still a long way to go.
But that does not mean the current developments should be ignored.
Black appears to be preparing for visits, and North Carolina is reportedly among the programs he is considering. That alone gives Malone an opportunity to make a major statement.
And if Malone can turn that opportunity into something bigger, the Tar Heels could find themselves in the middle of one of the most important recruiting battles of his early tenure.
The rivalry with Duke is already intense enough.
Adding the nation’s No. 1 recruit to the equation could take it to another level entirely.
For Malone, this is exactly the type of challenge he signed up for when he made the move to Chapel Hill.
Now, he has a chance to prove that his recruiting ability can match the reputation he built on the sidelines in the NBA.
The road to landing Black will not be easy.
But North Carolina is in the race.
And if Malone can put together a strong visit and convince Black that Chapel Hill is the right place for the next stage of his basketball career, the Tar Heels could have a legitimate shot at pulling off a recruiting victory that would reverberate throughout college basketball.
Something huge could be brewing in Chapel Hill — and Duke may be standing directly in the way.
