Liverpool have reportedly rejected a substantial £30 million offer from Nottingham Forest for highly rated midfielder Trey Nyoni, with the Reds making it clear that they have no intention of allowing one of their most promising young talents to leave before the transfer deadline.
The reported proposal from Forest was worth £25 million upfront, with a further £5 million available in potential add-ons. However, Liverpool were quick to turn down the approach, reinforcing their belief that Nyoni has an important role to play in the future of the first team.
The decision comes at a complicated time for Liverpool, who are facing significant squad-management challenges ahead of deadline day. Despite spending heavily this summer and completing the blockbuster signing of Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain for a reported £123 million, the Reds remain short of options in several areas.
One of their biggest problems is the Premier League’s non-homegrown player limit. Clubs are permitted to register a maximum of 17 non-homegrown players in their senior squad, and Liverpool are already understood to have reached that limit.
That restriction means Liverpool may need to create space before making another major addition.
Cody Gakpo has emerged as one player who could potentially have provided a solution. Manchester City reportedly showed interest in the Netherlands international, but Liverpool decided against allowing the forward to leave. His departure would have created another non-homegrown squad place, potentially giving the Reds greater flexibility on deadline day.
Liverpool’s current predicament is partly linked to decisions made during last summer’s transfer window. Reds legend Jamie Carragher recently described that window as one of the worst in Premier League history, with the club allowing several homegrown players to depart while bringing in relatively few players who could help with the registration balance.
Liverpool signed goalkeeper Freddie Woodman on a free transfer, while Jarell Quansah and Tyler Morton left the club. Trent Alexander-Arnold also departed for Real Madrid.
The situation has continued into this summer. Liverpool have reportedly sold three non-homegrown players while adding four, doing little to resolve the imbalance.
Young defender Ifeanyi Ndukwe has also been affected by the club’s current situation. The youngster does not qualify for a standard work permit and has therefore been unable to benefit from an Elite Significant Contribution permit. Liverpool lost one of their available slots after failing to provide sufficient minutes to England-qualified players last season.
Improving the number of opportunities given to homegrown players will therefore be an important objective for new head coach Andoni Iraola.
Nyoni could become an important part of that strategy.
The 19-year-old midfielder recently received an opportunity to impress when he came off the bench during Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest, playing 13 minutes. His brief appearance was enough to attract attention from Forest, who subsequently attempted to bring him to the City Ground.
According to The Times reporter Paul Joyce, Forest submitted the £25 million offer plus £5 million in potential bonuses. Liverpool, however, swiftly rejected the proposal and regard Nyoni as a valued member of their squad.
The youngster has been tipped for a breakthrough season following the departure of Curtis Jones, and Liverpool’s decision to reject such a significant bid suggests the club believes his development is progressing in the right direction.
For Forest, the failed Nyoni pursuit represents another attempt to strengthen their midfield with young talent from Merseyside.
They recently made a significant effort to sign Everton academy graduate Harrison Armstrong. Forest reportedly submitted a £35 million offer for the midfielder, which was initially accepted before Everton reversed their decision following a major reaction from supporters.
Both Armstrong and Nyoni now appear set to remain with their respective clubs beyond the transfer deadline.
Forest’s interest in Liverpool players may not end there, however.
The club have also reportedly made enquiries about goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. The Georgia international joined Liverpool from Valencia last summer but has struggled to displace established No. 1 Alisson.
Mamardashvili made 20 appearances across all competitions last season, largely because of Alisson’s periods of unavailability. He has started the current campaign on the bench for Liverpool’s opening two Premier League fixtures.
Liverpool’s goalkeeping department could also be strengthened further in the future. Fabrizio Romano reported that the Reds had reached a verbal agreement to sign 18-year-old Genk goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans, with the Belgian expected to move to Anfield next summer.
For now, though, Liverpool’s message regarding Nyoni appears unmistakable.
Despite receiving an offer worth up to £30 million, the Reds have chosen development and long-term planning over an immediate financial return. With the midfielder continuing to push for first-team opportunities, Liverpool clearly believe that his potential value to the club could be far greater than the fee Forest were prepared to pay.
As deadline day approaches, Nyoni’s future is therefore likely to remain an interesting storyline — but Liverpool have already made their position clear: their rising star is not for sale.
