As Duke looks ahead to the 2027 recruiting class, the Blue Devils could soon find themselves in the middle of one of the most important recruiting battles in the country.
At the center of that battle is Beckham Black, widely regarded as the No. 1 prospect in the 2027 class.
For Duke, landing Black would represent another major recruiting victory and could give the program one of the most dynamic young guards in the country. However, the Blue Devils will have plenty of competition, with North Carolina, Texas, Arkansas, Miami, USC and Florida also expected to be involved.
Black, a 6-foot-3 point guard from Southeastern Prep in Orlando, Florida, has quickly established himself as one of the most exciting prospects in his class. His combination of playmaking ability, confidence, scoring potential and court vision has made him a player that many college programs are already prioritizing.
What makes Black particularly intriguing is the improvement he has shown over the past year.
According to ESPN’s Paul Biancardi, Black has separated himself from the rest of the senior class after putting together a dominant stretch of basketball. His performance for Team USA at the FIBA U17 World Cup was especially impressive.
Black helped Team USA win the gold medal while averaging eight assists and just one turnover. That level of efficiency as a primary ball-handler is one of the biggest reasons his stock has continued to rise.
He also made significant progress as a shooter.
After shooting 28 percent from three-point range last year, Black improved to 36 percent this summer despite facing increased defensive attention. If that improvement continues, he could become an extremely difficult player to defend at the next level.
ESPN’s latest recruiting update indicates that Black is close to setting up visits to several major programs beginning in September.
Those schools reportedly include Texas, North Carolina, Arkansas, Duke, Miami, USC and Florida.
For Duke, getting Black onto campus could be an important early step in what could become a lengthy recruiting battle.
The Blue Devils have established themselves as one of the premier recruiting programs in college basketball, consistently competing for elite prospects and putting young players in position to develop into NBA talent. That track record could give Duke a compelling argument when Black begins narrowing down his options.
North Carolina, however, could make things particularly interesting.
The rivalry between Duke and UNC is already one of the biggest in college basketball, and recruiting battles between the two programs can carry additional significance. If Black ultimately chose the Tar Heels over Duke, it would undoubtedly be viewed as a major recruiting win for North Carolina.
At this point, though, there is no reason to assume the Tar Heels have the inside track.
In fact, Duke could have a legitimate opportunity to make a strong push once Black begins taking his visits.
While the Blue Devils may not currently be viewed as the overwhelming favorite, that could change quickly. Recruiting momentum can shift dramatically after a prospect visits a campus, meets the coaching staff and gets a better understanding of the role he could play.
For a player like Black, finding the right situation will be about more than simply choosing the biggest basketball program.
He will need a coaching staff that trusts him with the ball, gives him opportunities to create and surrounds him with talent capable of competing at the highest level. Duke has the resources, tradition and national platform to make a strong case.
Florida could also be an important program to watch, particularly given its recent success and growing reputation as a destination for elite talent. Texas, Arkansas, Miami and USC should not be overlooked either.
Still, Duke has every reason to believe it can compete for Black.
The Blue Devils’ challenge now is to turn interest into momentum.
Getting Black to Durham would be an encouraging development, but Duke will need to make the most of every opportunity once the visits begin. With the No. 1 prospect in the country potentially considering a trip to campus, the Blue Devils have a chance to position themselves for one of the biggest recruiting wins of the 2027 cycle.
There is still a long way to go before Black makes his final decision.
But if Duke can make a strong impression early, the Blue Devils could emerge as one of the biggest threats in the race.
And if the battle ultimately comes down to Duke and North Carolina, the stakes could become even higher.
For now, the message is simple: Duke is in the fight, and the pursuit of Beckham Black could become one of the most fascinating recruiting storylines in college basketball over the next year.
