Michael Malone and the North Carolina Tar Heels appear to be gaining serious momentum in the recruitment of five-star forward CJ Rosser, the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2027 recruiting class.
According to recruiting insider Joe Tipton, North Carolina is currently viewed by some sources as the frontrunner for the highly coveted 6-foot-9 forward. The Tar Heels are competing against several major programs, including NC State, Kentucky, Louisville, Arkansas and Miami, but Malone’s program appears to have established an early advantage.
“Rosser, the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2027 class, has been recruited by the likes of North Carolina, NC State, Kentucky, Louisville, Arkansas, and Miami,” Tipton reported. “Sources believe Michael Malone and the Tar Heels are the current team to beat.”
Rosser is expected to provide another major recruiting storyline when he announces his upcoming list cut and official visits on September 9. For North Carolina, remaining at the front of the race would represent another significant recruiting victory for Malone as he continues to reshape the program.
The 6-foot-9 forward has already demonstrated the potential to become an elite player at the next level. His combination of size, athleticism and versatility makes him one of the most intriguing prospects in his class.
During his EYBL campaign, Rosser averaged 16.6 points per game. Although his shooting numbers during that stretch were inconsistent, his performances against international competition offered a much stronger indication of his upside.
While playing for Team USA at the U17 World Cup, Rosser was considerably more efficient. He averaged 16.4 points per game while shooting 51 percent from the field and 37 percent from three-point range.
Those numbers highlight the offensive versatility that makes Rosser such an appealing target. He has the size to create problems around the basket while also possessing the ability to stretch the floor. If his development continues, he could eventually become the type of two-way forward capable of making an immediate impact at the college level.
For North Carolina, landing Rosser would be enormous.
The Tar Heels are entering a new era under Malone, who arrived in Chapel Hill after a successful run as head coach of the Denver Nuggets. During his decade in the NBA, Malone compiled a 471-327 record and guided Denver to its first NBA championship during the 2022-23 season.
His arrival represented a major change for North Carolina following the program’s decision to move on from Hubert Davis.
Now, Malone has an opportunity to build the Tar Heels into a national powerhouse, and recruiting players such as Rosser will be an important part of that process.
North Carolina already has an intriguing roster for the 2026-27 season, giving Malone a strong foundation as he attempts to make the Tar Heels more competitive on the national stage. Adding the No. 1 recruit in the 2027 class could take that momentum to another level.
Rosser would also fit naturally into the type of roster Malone appears to be building. His size and two-way potential could give North Carolina another versatile piece capable of contributing in multiple areas of the game.
The Tar Heels’ recent history makes the need for a recruiting breakthrough even more important. North Carolina finished the 2025 season with a 24-9 record under Davis but was eliminated in the first round of the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season.
Davis had several successful moments during his tenure, but the program ultimately decided that a change was necessary. Malone now has the difficult task of restoring North Carolina to consistent national-title contention.
Being considered the “team to beat” for the nation’s No. 1 recruit is an encouraging early sign.
Of course, there is still plenty of work to do. Rosser has multiple elite programs pursuing him, and his upcoming list cut and official visits could significantly change the complexion of the recruitment.
For now, however, North Carolina has reason to be optimistic.
If Malone can ultimately convince Rosser to choose Chapel Hill, the Tar Heels would secure one of the biggest recruiting prizes in the 2027 class and add another cornerstone piece to the program’s future.
The recruitment is far from over, but North Carolina’s emergence as the early favorite could be one of the most important developments of the 2027 cycle.
For Malone and the Tar Heels, the message is clear: the pursuit of the nation’s No. 1 recruit is officially heating up.
