Leeds United will return to Yorkshire with mixed emotions after being held to a draw by Brighton, knowing they had a genuine opportunity to take all three points from the Amex.
Daniel Farke’s side produced a performance that will ultimately leave them frustrated, particularly because they created enough opportunities to put the game beyond Brighton’s reach. For long periods, Leeds looked the more dangerous team and appeared capable of securing another important Premier League victory.
The Whites made an encouraging start on the south coast, taking the game to their hosts and showing plenty of confidence in possession. Their early advantage put Brighton under pressure and gave Leeds the platform to control the contest.
However, what followed was a familiar problem: Leeds were unable to make their opportunities count.

There were plenty of positives, though.
Leeds showed the organisation, determination and tactical discipline required to compete away from home in the Premier League. Rather than sitting deep and simply attempting to protect their lead, Farke’s players continued to look for opportunities to threaten Brighton.
The challenge was maintaining that intensity for the full 90 minutes.
As the match progressed, fatigue began to creep into the Leeds players’ legs. The visitors had worked extremely hard, particularly during the opening stages, and the physical demands of the contest eventually began to tell.
Brighton grew into the game during the second half and started finding more opportunities in dangerous areas.

Farke’s side could easily have been punished for failing to put the game to bed earlier.

Ultimately, a point feels like a fair reward for a Leeds side that showed plenty of promise but will know they could have taken more.
The result also continues an encouraging run for Farke’s team. Leeds have now lost only three of their last 16 Premier League matches, demonstrating that the club has developed into a much more competitive side at this level.
That consistency will be crucial if Leeds are serious about avoiding another difficult campaign and establishing themselves comfortably higher up the Premier League table.
The early signs are certainly encouraging.
Five points from their opening three league games represents a solid return, particularly considering the quality of opposition and the demands placed on a newly established Premier League side. There is still plenty of room for improvement, but Leeds have already shown that they are capable of competing.
The biggest lesson from Brighton is perhaps that matches cannot always be won through dominance alone.
Leeds created opportunities, controlled large portions of the game and had their opponents under pressure, but they needed greater ruthlessness in front of goal. Had they converted one of their additional chances, the conversation after the final whistle could have been very different.
That is an area Farke will undoubtedly want to address.
At the same time, the manager can take considerable encouragement from the overall performance. His players showed character away from home, responded well to pressure and refused to surrender when Brighton increased the intensity.
For Leeds supporters, that is reason for optimism.
There will inevitably be disappointment at missing the chance to claim maximum points, but this was not a performance that should cause alarm. Instead, it showed a team that is developing, competing and learning how to handle the demands of Premier League football.
Leeds now have the opportunity to build on this result. If they can combine their defensive resilience and attacking creativity with a little more efficiency in front of goal, there is every reason to believe they can improve significantly on last season.
The point at Brighton may feel like two points dropped, but it is also another step forward.
