September brings a familiar feeling around Duke basketball. With the college basketball season getting closer and the NBA preparing for another campaign, the activity inside and around Cameron Indoor Stadium begins to pick up. For the Blue Devils, that also means welcoming back some of the most recognizable members of the program’s storied Brotherhood.
Former Duke stars frequently return to campus during the offseason to reconnect with the program, spend time with the current players and, perhaps most importantly, get on the court with the younger generation.
That tradition was on full display again in a recent workout.
As far as we know, several prominent members of the Brotherhood have already made their way back to Durham this year to hoop with the current Blue Devils. Jabari Parker, Cooper Flagg, Kyrie Irving, Jayson Tatum and Jared McCain have all been involved in runs at Duke, providing the current roster with an opportunity that few college programs can match.
The latest video offered another impressive collection of former Blue Devils.
McCain, Irving and Tatum were all featured on the court, while Paolo Banchero also joined the action. The appearance of Banchero added another major name to an already star-studded group. There was even a special cameo from former Duke player Amile Jefferson, who is now working as an assistant coach with the Boston Celtics.
For Duke fans, scenes like these represent much more than a casual offseason basketball run.
The Brotherhood has always been one of the defining characteristics of the Duke program. Players who leave Durham often maintain a strong connection with the university, their former teammates and the coaching staff. Seeing established NBA players return to the place where their careers began reinforces the idea that playing for Duke can create relationships that extend far beyond a college career.
For the current Blue Devils, there is also an obvious basketball benefit.
The NBA players returning to campus have already experienced the demands of playing at the highest level. Whether it is Irving’s creativity and ball-handling, Tatum’s scoring versatility, Banchero’s physicality, or McCain’s perimeter ability, the current players have the chance to watch and compete against athletes who have successfully made the jump from college basketball to the NBA.
Those experiences can be valuable as the new Duke team continues preparing for the upcoming season.
Of course, the current Blue Devils have their own ambitions. Jon Scheyer’s program is building another talented roster, and several players could eventually find themselves joining the long list of Duke alumni who make their mark professionally.
Caleb Foster is among the veterans expected to provide leadership and experience. John Blackwell brings the experience of college basketball and another capable perimeter presence. Freshman stars Cayden Boozer and Deron Rippey are also expected to attract significant attention, while international talent such as Dame Sarr gives the roster another intriguing dimension.
Drew Scharnowski, Bryson Howard, Cameron Williams, Maxime Meyer, Patrick Ngongba and Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje are also part of a group hoping to establish themselves in Durham.
For those players, watching Duke alumni return to campus provides a glimpse of what could eventually be waiting for them.
There is still a long road between being a college player and becoming an NBA star, and nobody on the current roster can assume that path will happen automatically. But being surrounded by players who have already made that journey can offer inspiration while also providing a valuable reminder of the standard expected at Duke.
The timing could hardly be better.
With the college season approaching, every practice, workout and competitive run becomes part of the preparation process. The current Blue Devils are trying to develop chemistry, sharpen their skills and understand what it will take to compete when the games begin to count.
Having former stars around only adds to that environment.
For Duke supporters, meanwhile, it is simply great to see the Brotherhood continue to grow. Players who once wore the Duke jersey are now NBA stars, coaches and established professionals, yet they still find their way back to Durham.
And when they do, they are not just visiting.
They are coming home.
That is what makes these offseason runs so special. The names may change from year to year, but the connection remains. As another college basketball season approaches, Duke’s newest generation is getting the opportunity to share the court with some of the program’s biggest stars—and perhaps get an early look at their own potential future.
