Leeds United have the chance to be part of a remarkably rare piece of Premier League history when they face Newcastle United at Elland Road on Monday night.
After the opening nine fixtures of the fourth matchweek produced no home victories, the spotlight now falls on Leeds and Newcastle. If Leeds fail to secure all three points, the entire round of fixtures will have gone without a single home win.
That would be an extraordinary outcome given how frequently home advantage has influenced results throughout Premier League history.
So far, the first nine matches of the gameweek have produced four draws and five away victories. Ipswich Town, Nottingham Forest, Arsenal, Brighton & Hove Albion and Manchester City have all claimed victories on the road, while four other fixtures ended level.
Leeds are therefore the final opportunity for a home side to prevent a completely winless week for teams playing in front of their own supporters.
A Newcastle victory or another draw at Elland Road would see this gameweek enter the record books as only the fourth in Premier League history to feature no home wins whatsoever.
It is a statistic that highlights just how unusual the current set of results has been.
The last time a full Premier League matchweek passed without a home victory was more than two decades ago, on September 23 and 24, 2000. On that occasion, seven of the 10 matches ended in draws, while Southampton, West Ham United and Charlton Athletic were the only teams to claim victories.
The fact that such an occurrence has not been seen since 2000 underlines the rarity of what Leeds could potentially experience on Monday.
The previous two occasions came even earlier. One occurred in December 1996, while the other happened on Boxing Day in 1994.
The 1994 occurrence was particularly notable because it came during the final season in which the Premier League consisted of 22 clubs. The division was subsequently reduced to its current 20-team format, meaning the structure of the competition has remained different from that first Boxing Day instance.
Since the Premier League began in August 1992, thousands of matches have been played, making the lack of a single home victory across an entire round of fixtures an exceptionally uncommon event.
Monday’s fixture is therefore about more than just three points for Leeds. The result could determine whether another unusual chapter is added to Premier League history.
The numbers put the rarity into perspective. This is the 1,308th round of fixtures since the Premier League’s inaugural season. Across the previous 1,307 completed matchweeks, there had been only three occasions when no home team managed to win.
That means a matchweek without a home victory has occurred in just 0.22% of full Premier League rounds.
Put another way, supporters have witnessed this unusual sequence approximately once every 11 and a half seasons during a standard 38-game campaign.
For Leeds, however, the historical statistic is likely to be secondary to the immediate task at hand.
Daniel Farke’s side will be focused on producing a result against Newcastle and making the most of home advantage. Elland Road has traditionally been one of English football’s most intense environments, with the Leeds supporters capable of creating a difficult atmosphere for visiting teams.
Newcastle, meanwhile, will be looking to ensure that the unusual streak continues. An away victory would not only give Eddie Howe’s side a valuable three points but would also make the entire matchweek one of the rarest in Premier League history.
That creates an intriguing dynamic heading into Monday’s contest.
Leeds are effectively playing for two things: their own league position and the opportunity to prevent a statistical anomaly. Newcastle, on the other hand, have the chance to become the final away side to take advantage of a remarkable gameweek in which home teams have struggled across the board.
A Leeds victory would restore some normality, ensuring that at least one home side has managed to claim three points. Anything else would send the matchweek into an exclusive historical category.
There have been countless memorable Premier League weekends since the competition began in 1992, but very few have produced such a consistent pattern of results.
Now, after 25 years without one, the possibility of another completely home-winless matchweek rests on what happens at Elland Road.
Leeds have the opportunity to stop history from repeating itself. Newcastle have the chance to make sure it does.
Either way, Monday night’s meeting has suddenly taken on an additional layer of significance beyond the usual battle for Premier League points.
