Leeds United welcome Newcastle United to Elland Road on Monday night with both sides looking to extend their unbeaten starts to the Premier League season.
The two teams have made almost identical beginnings to the campaign. Leeds sit 11th in the table, while Newcastle occupy 10th, with both clubs recording one victory and two draws from their opening three matches. Each side has collected five points, with Newcastle holding the advantage only because of a slightly superior goal difference.
That makes Monday’s meeting an intriguing early-season contest, with both Daniel Farke and Matthias Jaissle eager to see their teams take another step forward.
Leeds Looking to End Newcastle Hoodoo
Leeds will have history to overcome, having failed to defeat Newcastle in their last six meetings. The Whites have drawn four and lost two of those encounters, with their most recent victory coming in January 2021 when they recorded a 2-1 away win.
The last meeting between the sides was a seven-goal thriller in January, with Newcastle eventually claiming victory. Their previous visit to Elland Road, however, ended in a goalless draw in August 2025.
Newcastle’s record at Elland Road should also provide confidence. The Magpies have lost just once in their last eight visits, recording four wins and three draws during that run. Their only defeat came in a 5-2 loss in 2020.
However, there is one statistic that could encourage Leeds supporters. Newcastle have not won their opening two away league matches of a season since the 1995-96 campaign.
Interestingly, Leeds have previously enjoyed unbeaten starts through the first four games in three different seasons: 1998-99, 2001-02 and, most recently, the current campaign’s early stages.
Farke’s Leeds Continue to Impress
Despite the difficult defeat to Chelsea in the Carabao Cup, Leeds enter Monday’s game with plenty of reasons for optimism.
Farke’s team have lost just once in their last 12 matches stretching back into last season, recording five victories and six draws during that impressive run.
The German manager has established a clear identity at Leeds, built around intensity, aggressive pressing and a willingness to move the ball forward quickly.
That approach has been reflected in the early statistics. Leeds have registered the second-highest number of high-intensity pressures in the opposition half in the Premier League this season, with 528.
They have also recorded the third-highest percentage of long passes in the division, at 18 percent. The combination suggests that Leeds are comfortable playing directly when necessary, particularly when their midfielders and forwards can immediately apply pressure and force opponents into mistakes.
The challenge against Newcastle will be maintaining that intensity while avoiding the defensive vulnerabilities that were exposed during the 6-3 Carabao Cup defeat to Chelsea.
Newcastle’s Unusual Start
Jaissle’s Newcastle have also shown plenty of attacking efficiency, although their underlying numbers tell an interesting story.
The Magpies have scored six goals from only eight shots on target this season, demonstrating an impressive level of finishing. However, they have also faced more shots than any other Premier League team so far, with opponents attempting 61 efforts against them.
That imbalance could be an important factor at Elland Road.
If Leeds can use their pressing game to create turnovers and generate more opportunities than Newcastle have allowed in previous matches, Farke’s players could cause serious problems for the visitors.
Newcastle, meanwhile, will hope their remarkable efficiency in front of goal continues.
Barnes a Major Threat for Leeds
One Newcastle player Leeds will be particularly wary of is Harvey Barnes.
The winger has developed an impressive record against the Yorkshire club, scoring eight goals in his last nine appearances against Leeds. Seven of those goals have come in Premier League matches.
Barnes was also responsible for the dramatic winner in the most recent meeting between the teams, finding the net after 101 minutes and 48 seconds to produce one of the latest goals in Premier League history.
Leeds are reportedly Barnes’ favourite opponent, while only a handful of players have scored more Premier League goals against them. Alan Shearer leads the way with 20, followed by Thierry Henry with 10, while Teddy Sheringham and Mohamed Salah have both scored nine.
A Chance to Make Premier League History
There is another storyline adding significance to Monday night’s fixture.
None of the first nine matches of Premier League matchweek four produced a home victory. If Newcastle avoid defeat at Elland Road, it would mean the entire weekend has passed without a home team winning.
That would be a rare occurrence in Premier League history. It has happened only three times previously, in September 2000, December 1996 and December 1994.
For Leeds, however, the priority will be much simpler.
Farke’s side will want to respond strongly after the disappointment against Chelsea, extend their unbeaten league start and finally end their long wait for a victory over Newcastle.
With both clubs level on five points, Monday night’s contest could provide an early indication of which side is better equipped to push toward the upper half of the Premier League table.
