The 2026-27 college basketball season is still a couple of months away, but anticipation surrounding the North Carolina Tar Heels is already building. After two consecutive first-round exits from the NCAA Tournament, the program enters a pivotal season with a new head coach, a revamped roster, and renewed expectations.
North Carolina made one of the biggest coaching moves of the offseason by parting ways with Hubert Davis and hiring Michael Malone. The former NBA head coach arrived in Chapel Hill with limited time to become familiar with the college basketball landscape, establish recruiting relationships, and reshape the Tar Heels’ roster.
Despite those challenges, Malone and his coaching staff have assembled a team capable of competing at a high level. The roster looks considerably different from last season, but the changes have created a more balanced group with talent across multiple positions.
UNC REMAINS ON NO. 8 SEED LINE
ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi recently released an updated version of his Bracketology, and the Tar Heels remain projected as a No. 8 seed. That represents no movement from his previous projection.
An eighth seed would put North Carolina in an intriguing position entering the NCAA Tournament. If the Tar Heels advanced through the opening round, they would potentially face a No. 1 seed in the second round, creating an immediate challenge for a team hoping to make a deeper March run.
However, preseason projections are only snapshots of where a team stands before the season begins. North Carolina will have an entire regular season to change the perception surrounding its potential.
A CHALLENGING SOUTH REGION
In Lunardi’s current projection, North Carolina is placed in the South Region alongside several established national programs.
Florida occupies the No. 1 seed position in the region, while Michigan State is projected as the No. 2 seed. Houston comes in at No. 3, followed by St. John’s as the No. 4 seed and Iowa State as the No. 5 seed.
That would make the road particularly demanding for the Tar Heels. An eighth seed would leave very little room for error, especially with multiple experienced programs potentially standing between North Carolina and the later stages of the tournament.
There is, however, an encouraging element to the projection.
North Carolina would reportedly open tournament play in Charlotte, giving the Tar Heels an opportunity to play in a familiar environment. In the current projection, Auburn would be the first-round opponent.
Playing close to home could provide an important boost, particularly for a program beginning its first NCAA Tournament under Malone. A strong fan presence could make the opening-round environment feel more like a home game than a neutral-site contest.
THE BACKCOURT COULD DEFINE UNC’S SEASON
The biggest question surrounding North Carolina may be whether its revamped backcourt can provide the production and consistency needed to compete against the nation’s best teams.
Last season, the Tar Heels were heavily reliant on their frontcourt. This year’s roster shifts the emphasis toward the perimeter, with Terrence Brown, Neoklis Avdalas, and Matt Able expected to play important roles.
That trio could ultimately determine how far North Carolina goes.
Modern college basketball has repeatedly demonstrated the importance of having guards who can create offense, handle pressure, knock down perimeter shots, and take control when games become tight. Tournament games often come down to a handful of possessions, making reliable backcourt play especially valuable.
The coaching staff appears to have recognized that reality while constructing the roster.
Rather than simply replacing individual players, Malone and his staff have attempted to build a group with complementary strengths. The result is a team that could have multiple options offensively while giving the coaching staff greater flexibility depending on the opponent.
MALONE’S IMPACT COULD BE CRUCIAL
Malone’s transition from the NBA to college basketball will be closely watched throughout the season. His experience coaching at the highest level of professional basketball gives him a different perspective, but adapting to the college game will still require time.
Recruiting, roster management, player development, and the rhythm of the college season are all different challenges.
If Malone can quickly establish his system and get the new roster playing together, North Carolina could outperform its preseason expectations.
The No. 8 seed projection should therefore be viewed as a starting point rather than a final assessment of the Tar Heels’ ceiling.
North Carolina has plenty of work ahead, but the combination of a new coaching voice, a deeper-looking roster, and a backcourt capable of making an impact gives the program an opportunity to change the conversation.
For a team coming off two straight first-round NCAA Tournament exits, the objective is clear: build consistency during the regular season, develop chemistry, and arrive in March playing its best basketball.
If those pieces come together, the Tar Heels could enter the NCAA Tournament with considerably more momentum than current bracket projections suggest.
