Frank Lampard has called on Coventry City to remain adaptable and positive as they prepare for a difficult Premier League trip to Nottingham Forest this weekend.
The Sky Blues travel to the City Ground still searching for their first point and first goal of the campaign, with a challenging opening to their return to the top flight leaving them at the bottom of the Premier League table.
Coventry have suffered defeats in each of their first four league matches, with their latest setback coming in emphatic fashion last weekend when Brighton & Hove Albion recorded a 5-0 victory at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
Their difficult run continued in midweek as they were eliminated from the Carabao Cup following a 3-1 home defeat to Midlands rivals Aston Villa. The result added further frustration, although Lampard believes his players must quickly put the disappointment behind them and concentrate on improving before the upcoming international break.
For the Coventry manager, maintaining the right mentality will be particularly important as the team attempts to find consistency in a new environment.
“We’ll be adaptable and look at the opposition and see what we feel is the best opportunity to get the best out of our team,” Lampard said.
The former England and Chelsea midfielder also acknowledged that a poor run of results can naturally affect confidence, but insisted that Coventry cannot allow disappointment to distract them from the work required to improve.
“We have to [keep a positive mindset] because it’s football. We’ve been privileged for a while to win a lot of football matches,” he said.
“Sometimes it’s human nature to feel down but we have to just focus on the work we’ve got to do to try and improve and get results.”
Coventry’s early-season difficulties have also been accompanied by considerable changes to the squad, with several new players arriving during the transfer window.
That has left Lampard with the task of finding the right balance, combinations and tactical approach while simultaneously trying to compete at the highest level of English football.
The Coventry boss reverted to a back four during the midweek clash with Aston Villa and made nine changes to the starting lineup, underlining the number of options and combinations he is still assessing.
Lampard admitted that he is continuing to learn about his squad and determine which players can establish themselves as regular starters.
“I think it’s old hat ‘do you know your best team’ as a modern coach because you have so many games and experiences,” Lampard explained.
“Players have to work hard to find the consistency that means they’re an every week man.”
The manager’s comments highlight the transitional period Coventry are currently experiencing. After building momentum to reach the Premier League, the club now face the significantly different demands that come with competing against established top-flight opponents.
Lampard believes his squad needs time to develop the understanding required to perform consistently, particularly with so many new arrivals still adapting to one another.
“It’s clear that at this point we don’t quite have that because we brought in so many players,” he added.
“We’re working towards that, some things will take some time. The combinations have to be worked at.”
That process will be tested again at Nottingham Forest, where Coventry will face another demanding opponent away from home.
The Sky Blues will need to respond to their difficult start, but Lampard’s emphasis on adaptability suggests that he is prepared to adjust his tactical approach according to the opposition rather than becoming fixed on one system.
The immediate objective is clear: Coventry need to turn promising periods of play into goals and results.
Their inability to score in their opening four league matches has placed additional pressure on the squad, while the defensive problems exposed in recent defeats have provided another area for improvement.
However, Lampard is refusing to allow the early results to define his team’s season.
