LEEDS UNITED SECRET WEAPON: JAYDEN BOGLE’S ENGLAND SNUB LEAVES CELEBRITY FAN TORN

Jayden Bogle’s impressive start to the Premier League season has made him one of Leeds United’s most important players, but his continued absence from the England squad has produced mixed feelings among supporters.

The Leeds right-back has quickly established himself as a key component of Daniel Farke’s side, contributing at both ends of the pitch and showing the attacking qualities that have made him such an influential figure since the club returned to the Premier League.

Bogle has already found the net this season, scoring in Leeds’ 1-1 draw against Brighton at the Amex Stadium. He appeared to have added another goal during the emphatic 4-1 victory over Newcastle United, although the goal was ultimately credited to Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Those performances have strengthened the feeling around Elland Road that Bogle is becoming an increasingly important weapon for Farke. His pace, energy and willingness to push forward have given Leeds another dimension from the right side, while his ability to contribute defensively has also helped him establish himself as a regular.

His form had even led to suggestions that he could come under consideration for England. However, when Thomas Tuchel named his latest squad, Bogle was once again left out.

For Kaiser Chiefs bassist and well-known Leeds supporter Simon Rix, the decision is difficult to view from just one perspective.

RIX SEES BOTH SIDES OF THE ARGUMENT

Rix understands why Bogle would want the opportunity to represent England. For any professional footballer, earning an international call-up can represent one of the biggest achievements of a career.

At the same time, Rix admitted that there is a selfish side to his thinking as a Leeds supporter.

Speaking on the Don’t Go To Bed Just Yet podcast, Rix explained that while he would be delighted to see Bogle receive international recognition, he also likes the idea of the defender continuing to operate outside the spotlight.

The Leeds fan described Bogle as a potential “secret weapon” for Farke and suggested that Leeds could benefit if the player remains under the radar for longer.

That sentiment reflects just how highly Bogle’s performances are regarded by supporters. Rather than simply being a full-back who provides width, he has become an important part of Leeds’ overall attacking structure.

His ability to make forward runs, provide an outlet on the flank and arrive in dangerous positions has added another threat to a team that has made an encouraging start to life back in the Premier League.

COMPETITION FOR ENGLAND RIGHT-BACK SPOT

Bogle’s biggest obstacle at international level is not necessarily his own form. The competition for places in England’s squad remains intense.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has returned to the national-team picture, immediately increasing the number of established options available to Tuchel.

There is also Tino Livramento, who remains highly regarded after his progress at Newcastle United. The full-back was part of England’s wider plans around the World Cup but missed out after suffering an injury.

Reece James has also been an important option for England when fit, although injuries have complicated his availability.

During the World Cup, England faced difficulties at right-back, with Alexander-Arnold out of favour and James dealing with fitness problems. Ezri Konsa, Djed Spence and Jarrell Quansah were among the players used in the position as England progressed to the semi-finals.

The current situation is therefore more complicated for Bogle, with several players competing for limited places.

LEEDS WILL WANT BOGLE TO KEEP IMPROVING

For Leeds, the immediate priority will be keeping Bogle fit and maintaining his current level of performance.

The 26-year-old joined Leeds from Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United in the summer of 2024, signing a four-year contract. He played an important role in the club’s promotion campaign and has continued to develop since Leeds returned to the top flight.

His performances have now placed him firmly among the players Leeds supporters are watching closely.

An England call-up would undoubtedly represent recognition of his progress, but Rix’s comments underline another perspective. Leeds supporters may be perfectly happy for Bogle to continue improving without attracting too much attention from the Premier League’s biggest clubs.

For now, Bogle’s focus is likely to remain on Leeds and maintaining the form that has made him such a valuable part of Farke’s team.

If he continues producing goals, assists, defensive contributions and energetic performances from the right flank, the England conversation is unlikely to disappear.

Whether that eventually leads to an international opportunity remains to be seen. But for Leeds, having an in-form Bogle operating as an influential attacking full-back could prove far more important in the short term.

The England door may still be open. Until then, Leeds supporters can continue enjoying their “secret weapon” at Elland Road.
