That places Kentucky effectively around No. 27 based on the voting total. One AP voter, Dave Preston, went considerably higher and placed Kentucky at No. 17 on his individual ballot.
The movement is particularly noteworthy because Kentucky entered the Texas A&M game as an unranked team and faced an Aggies squad that had been ranked No. 9 nationally. Kentucky’s 31–21 victory therefore represented more than another win on the schedule; it was a result that directly affected the national rankings.
Kentucky Shocks Texas A&M
The Wildcats traveled to College Station and produced one of the biggest upsets of the weekend.
Texas A&M entered the game ranked No. 9 in the country, while Kentucky was outside the AP Top 25. By the end of the afternoon, Kentucky had secured a 31–21 victory and handed the Aggies a major setback.
According to Reuters, Kentucky quarterback Kenny Minchey threw for 252 yards and two touchdowns, while running back CJ Baxter scored twice on the ground. The victory was Kentucky’s first over Texas A&M since 1952.
The result also ended Texas A&M’s regular-season home winning streak, which had extended back to 2024. Those details help explain why the victory received such strong national attention.

ESPN’s Football Power Index also moved Kentucky up substantially. The Wildcats rose 15 positions to No. 36 in the latest FPI rankings, according to the report. DRatings also placed Kentucky at No. 36.
These numbers do not mean that all ranking systems view Kentucky in exactly the same way. Instead, they show that the Texas A&M victory produced a measurable change in how several systems evaluate the Wildcats.
The SEC Picture Has Changed
Kentucky’s victory also affected the broader Southeastern Conference rankings.
The latest AP Top 25 contains 10 SEC teams, including Texas at No. 1, Georgia at No. 2, Ole Miss at No. 4, Alabama at No. 8 and LSU at No. 10. Florida entered the rankings at No. 21, while Mississippi State entered at No. 24.
Against that backdrop, Kentucky’s performance becomes even more significant.
