Tarik Muharemovic is quickly becoming a fan favourite at Leeds United, with the defender continuing to make an impact during an encouraging but demanding start to life back in the Premier League.
The 23-year-old centre-back may not have produced his most complete performance during Sunday’s goalless draw with Crystal Palace at Elland Road, but his importance to Daniel Farke’s side was once again clear.
Muharemovic produced two outstanding defensive interventions that helped Leeds preserve a valuable point against a Palace side that looked sharper for long periods.
His first major contribution arrived inside the opening 10 minutes. Jorgen Strand Larsen found himself through on goal and appeared to have an opportunity to threaten the Leeds defence, only for Muharemovic to produce a perfectly timed sliding challenge to prevent the danger.
The defender saved his most dramatic moment for the closing stages.
With Palace pushing for a winner, Ismaila Sarr looked poised to break the deadlock. However, Muharemovic threw himself into the path of the shot and produced another crucial block to deny the visitors.
His reaction said everything about how much the moment meant. Muharemovic celebrated the intervention almost like a goal, while his teammates and supporters could appreciate the significance of another important defensive contribution.
Those moments are helping the Bosnia and Herzegovina international establish himself as an increasingly popular figure among Leeds supporters.
The result also underlined how important Leeds’ defensive structure has been during the opening weeks of the campaign. The Whites remain unbeaten after five Premier League matches and sit fifth in the table with nine points.
Leeds have conceded only three goals so far, a total matched only by Everton for the fewest in the division at this stage.
Muharemovic has played a significant role in that record, while goalkeeper James Trafford has also provided a composed presence behind the defence since arriving at the club.
Against Palace, however, Leeds were far from their best.
Oliver Glasner’s side entered the contest with confidence after a 4-0 Europa League victory over Lech Poznan just three days earlier, and Palace looked the more energetic team for much of the afternoon.
Leeds struggled to generate their usual attacking intensity and often found themselves second best in challenges. Their passing was also less fluid than Farke would have wanted, while several set-piece opportunities failed to produce a meaningful threat.
Palace thought they had finally found the breakthrough shortly after half-time.
Anan Khalali appeared to be narrowly offside before delivering a cross from the right, with Tyrick Mitchell finishing the move. VAR subsequently ruled that Khalali had strayed offside, allowing Leeds to escape.
The home supporters, already frustrated by their team’s performance, sensed that the decision could prove significant.
Leeds then came within inches of producing a completely different ending.
James Justin delivered an excellent cross from the right, finding Dominic Calvert-Lewin in a dangerous position. The striker connected with the ball but could not keep his effort down enough to beat Walter Benitez.
It was a major opportunity for Leeds to steal all three points despite their overall struggles.
For Calvert-Lewin, the match represented another chapter in an impressive week. The striker had recently been credited with a second goal against Newcastle following a decision by the Goals Accreditation Appeals Panel, after Leeds’ memorable 4-1 victory at St James’ Park.
He was also recalled to England’s Nations League squad.
A goal against Palace would have added another memorable moment, as Calvert-Lewin had the opportunity to become the first Leeds player since Arthur Hydes in 1932 to score in six consecutive home matches at Elland Road.
Ultimately, that historic opportunity went begging.
While Leeds will have been disappointed with their attacking display, the result still extends their unbeaten run and provides another indication that Farke’s team can remain competitive even when their performance level drops.
The challenge now is to use the extended international break to recover, regroup and rediscover the attacking rhythm that made the side so dangerous earlier in the campaign.
Farke acknowledged that Leeds were below their usual standard in possession and attack.
“Offensive football-wise, it was definitely not our best game today,” the Leeds boss admitted.
He also felt his players were “a bit slow in the head” and did not move the ball quickly enough from side to side.
Farke also credited Palace for making life difficult, describing Glasner’s side as well structured and difficult to break down.
For Leeds, the immediate priority will be finding greater consistency in possession while maintaining the defensive resilience that has carried them through difficult moments.
Muharemovic’s emergence as a reliable defender and growing cult hero gives Farke another reason for optimism.
The Bosnia and Herzegovina international’s dramatic blocks against Palace may not have produced headlines like a spectacular goal, but they helped Leeds remain unbeaten.
If he continues producing moments like those while the rest of the team finds its rhythm, Muharemovic could become an increasingly important figure in Leeds United’s Premier League campaign.
