As the new college basketball season draws closer, excitement around Kentucky continues to build. The Wildcats enter the 2026-27 campaign with a revamped roster featuring a blend of proven production, high-level transfers and returning talent, and a recent CBS Sports ranking has provided another reason for Big Blue Nation to be optimistic.
CBS Sports writer Isaac Trotter recently examined some of the nation’s best players by breaking them into specific positional categories. Rather than simply ranking players by position, Trotter focused on the different roles they can play on the court, including initiating point guards, combo guards, shooting guards, true wings, off-ball wings, stretch fours, bruising fours, small-ball centers and traditional fives.
Kentucky stood out from the group, with four Wildcats earning recognition across four different categories.
That representation highlights the versatility of Mark Pope’s roster and the number of players expected to have significant responsibilities when the season begins.
Zoom Diallo was recognized as an initiator point guard, a role that could become especially important for Kentucky this season. Diallo is expected to take on a major role in the Wildcats’ backcourt and will be responsible for helping organize the offense, creating opportunities for teammates and setting the tempo.
Diallo averaged 15.7 points and 4.5 assists per game last season, showing that he can contribute as both a scorer and facilitator. With more offensive weapons around him at Kentucky, his playmaking could become even more important.
The Wildcats have several players capable of attacking defenses, including Alex Wilkins, Milan Momcilovic and Malachi Moreno. If Diallo can consistently put those players in advantageous situations, his assist numbers could climb significantly while making Kentucky’s offense more difficult to defend.
Wilkins also earned recognition from Trotter, landing in the combo guard category.
The former Furman standout enters Kentucky after an impressive freshman season in which he averaged 17.8 points and 4.7 assists per game. Wilkins demonstrated that he can create his own offense while also making plays for teammates, giving Pope another versatile option in the backcourt.
His performance at Furman showed his ability to perform on a major stage. Wilkins nearly helped the Paladins pull off an NCAA Tournament upset against UConn, and his combination of scoring ability, ball handling and playmaking could make him an important piece of Kentucky’s rotation.
Then there is Milan Momcilovic, who received perhaps the most eye-catching recognition of the four Wildcats.
Momcilovic was listed as the No. 1 off-ball wing.
The Iowa State transfer arrives in Lexington after producing at an extremely efficient level. He averaged 16.9 points and 3.1 rebounds per game while shooting 50.6% from the field and an impressive 48.7% from three-point range on 7.5 attempts per game.
That shooting ability could be one of Kentucky’s biggest weapons.
Momcilovic does not necessarily need the ball in his hands constantly to make an impact. His ability to move without the ball, stretch defenses and punish opponents from the perimeter could create valuable space for Kentucky’s guards and post players.
If he can maintain anything close to his previous efficiency while adjusting to a new system, Momcilovic could quickly emerge as one of the most dangerous offensive players in the SEC.
Finally, Malachi Moreno earned recognition among the nation’s top true centers.
The Kentucky native showed flashes of his potential during his freshman season, averaging 7.8 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game while shooting 58.2% from the field. His performance was strong enough that he seriously considered remaining in the NBA Draft before ultimately deciding to return to Kentucky.
That decision could prove significant for the Wildcats.
Moreno has another season to develop his game, improve his physicality and become more consistent on the glass. An offseason focused on strength, rebounding and playing through contact could help him take a major step forward.
For Kentucky, having four players recognized across different positional categories illustrates the depth and balance of the roster.
Diallo can initiate. Wilkins can create and score. Momcilovic can stretch defenses. Moreno can anchor the interior.
Now the challenge is turning individual talent into consistent team success.
Kentucky will enter the season with expectations, and the Wildcats will have opportunities throughout the campaign to prove they belong among the nation’s top teams. If these four players can establish strong chemistry and consistently perform in their respective roles, Pope could have the pieces necessary to make a deeper NCAA Tournament run.
