The Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves have officially set their rosters for the National League Wild Card Series, and several notable decisions have already sparked plenty of discussion ahead of the postseason matchup.
For Philadelphia, the roster includes a few surprises, particularly among the players acquired before the trade deadline. None of the Phillies’ trade-deadline additions ultimately made the roster, although injuries played a significant role in keeping some of those players out of the postseason picture.
Caleb Kilian is unavailable after suffering an oblique strain, while Luis Arraez is dealing with a sprained ankle. Both injuries made their absence from the Wild Card roster understandable. The Phillies had hoped their deadline additions could provide additional depth during the most important part of the season, but circumstances prevented that from happening.
Brooks Raley, however, was left off the roster for a different reason.
The veteran left-hander struggled considerably after joining Philadelphia. Raley posted a 7.94 ERA across 16 appearances with the Phillies, making it difficult for the club to trust him with a postseason role. At 38 years old, Raley entered the season with plenty of experience, but his performance ultimately pushed him out of the playoff plans.
His omission means Philadelphia will have to rely on the other members of its pitching staff as it attempts to navigate a difficult Wild Card matchup against Atlanta.
One of the more unusual aspects of the Phillies’ roster is the decision to carry three catchers. While carrying three players at the position is not unheard of, it stands out on a postseason roster where every spot is valuable.
Philadelphia apparently felt that the additional catching depth was more important than using the roster spot elsewhere. The decision could prove useful if injuries or matchup considerations arise during the series, but it also leaves the Phillies with less flexibility at other positions.

Kim not only made the postseason roster, but he is expected to start at shortstop despite struggling offensively during his time with the Braves. In 147 plate appearances, Kim hit just .116 and posted a .359 OPS.
Those numbers obviously do not tell the entire story of a player’s value, particularly when defense, experience and positional versatility are considered. Atlanta’s decision suggests the organization believes Kim can provide something beyond his offensive production.
His defense at shortstop could be an important factor in the series, especially in close games where one defensive play can dramatically change the outcome. The Braves are evidently willing to live with his offensive struggles in exchange for what they believe he can provide defensively and strategically.
That makes Kim one of the more intriguing players to watch when the series begins.
The Phillies and Braves are familiar postseason opponents, and their latest meeting adds another chapter to a rivalry that has produced plenty of memorable moments. Both clubs now have their rosters finalized, meaning the focus shifts away from roster construction and toward execution on the field.
For Philadelphia, the biggest questions will revolve around pitching depth, offensive consistency and whether its unusual three-catcher setup can pay off. The Phillies also have to move forward without several deadline additions who were expected to provide reinforcements.
For Atlanta, the spotlight will be on the pitching staff and on several position players facing important postseason opportunities. Kim’s role, in particular, could become a major storyline if he is able to make an impact with his glove or contribute offensively despite his difficult numbers.
